Taos Mercado co op near set to open in New Mexico
About 200 artisans and spectators gathered to approve articles of incorporation by laws and elect a seven member board for the War on Poverty sponsored Taos Mercado cooperative. The board will hire a manager and staff to run the $86,975 11 month program aimed at aiding low income craftspeople, with two thirds of board members to be low income artisans.

Taos Ski Valley reports excellent snow and crowds
Lack of snow hurt earlier events but Taos Ski Valley saw a good weekend turnout. Ernie Blake described conditions as excellent with upper runs covered by 40 to 60 inches of snow and recent storms adding five inches higher up and three below. Canyon road was sanded improving access. Thursday’s standard race was won by Bob Grinell with bronze to several guests. Jean Mayer of St Bernard Hotel Taos won the pro prize. Grinell’s open slalom time was 28.3 seconds. the expert class finished in 23.5 seconds. Races planned again today and Friday if weather allows.

A Taos delegation warned the county commission they would seek an injunction to block the Martinez y Salazar site citing soil conditions and a desire to place the courthouse nearer town center. The group did not state feelings on the Weimer site while offers on several tracts were reviewed.

Pond Candidate Seeks Youth Health Drive in Taos
Mrs. Pond pledged to hire a qualified person for a youth oriented system if elected to the council. The candidate, who joined the Boys Club of Taos Valley board, serves on the hospital auxiliary and was named to the state comprehensive health planning commission. Her lifelong work with youths includes reorganizing the Girl Scouts in 1954 and aiding various youth groups.

Luis T Carrillo Laid To Rest In Taos After War Veteran Death
Funeral services were held January 9 for Luis Teodoro Carrillo who died January 5 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marina Inez California. A World War I veteran and Purple Heart recipient aged 53, he resided in Taos. Fr Thomas Hesnan officiated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with burial at Dolores Cemetery in Taos. Rosaries were observed January 7 and 8 at Evergreen Chapel. Pallbearers included Fred Ocha James Vigil Gilbert Montoya Johnny Valdez Chris Valdez Chris Lopez Alfonso Medina Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Joe M Silva Jr Leroy Duran Eleuvine Silva and Luciano Martinez. He is survived by his widow Celina two sons Leroy and Roger of Albuquerque two sisters Dora Medina and Virginia Duran of Salt Lake City Utah one brother J B Carrillo of Fremont California and three grandchildren. Hanton Funeral Home arranged services.

County Board Cuts Farmland Values Across County
Oaos County Commissioners met with area farmers Tuesday night and agreed to lower the market value of agricultural land from 180 to 80 per acre. Sam Garcia, an appraiser, said similar reductions may come for other parts of the county if figures warrant.

Garcia Yucca Builders Supply began in 1946 and sold in 1953, then launched North Pueblo Home Supply the same year. His son Leroy helped run the business before starting his own clothing store. Garcia, a World War I veteran discharged as a sergeant, led Kiwanis and Kit Carson Electric Co op, chaired church boards, and held VFW and American Legion roles.

Thieves Strike Coronado Pharmacy Door In Break-In
Fernando Baca says the Coronado Pharmacy was robbed at 3:30 am by thieves who smashed the front door and took drugs including cholera and smallpox vaccines insulin and other items. About $52 in silver, wrist and pendant watches were also stolen. Taos Police Officer Teodoro Montoya ascertained the entry and state police to assist due to drugs involved. The Rio Grande Drug break-in three weeks earlier remains unsolved.
