Taos County pushes mobile home safety rule after fatal fire

Taos County Emergency Manager Tomas Trujillo proposed a manufactured home ordinance after a December fire on Straight Arrow Road injured four of five family members. He cited improper installation, frayed wiring, a drum stove with blower, and inappropriate propane heaters as risks observed at the scene.

Las Posadas in Taos keep old Christmas ritual alive

In Taos County natives restore the Las Posadas nine night Christmas rite with reenactments of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter. Isabel Rendén hosts the third night at her Arroyo Hondo home drawing 60 to 70 attendees for prayers, songs, and a traditional feast.

Town seeks sale of Taos Elementary and vacant Salazar parcel

Taos officials and the municipal school district will begin negotiations to sell Taos Elementary School and a nearby vacant Salazar Road lot. Town Manager Tomas Benavidez aims to move quickly to secure state funding before the legislative session and support a downtown consolidation project affecting Enos Garcia Elementary. The 60 year old building was appraised at 2.1 million dollars. The mayor notes purposes include easing crowded city hall and potential UNM Taos space leasing.

Five contend for Taos school board seats in 2007 race

Five residents registered December 19 to run in the Taos Municipal School Board election to fill three seats on February 6 2007. One contest pits former member Arsenio Cordova against newcomer Cabel Schoen son of former member Beau Schoen. The seat opened when Wanda Quintana did not seek another term. Cordova served two terms in the early 1980s.
