Taos Water Plan Seeks New Mexico Aquifer Trade
Congress backed the San Juan Chama Project in the 1960s delivering 100000 acre feet into the Rio Grande basin. Taos will draw 400 acre feet from southern wells while Heron Lake water passes to the Rio Chama. A five mile pipe to town and 300 foot lift costs over 1 million dollars with HUD funding possible by Sept. 1, 1982. Alternative options include water rights condemnation, 70-30 residential to commercial allocation, and strict water rights enforcement plus eventual recycled effluent for drinking fountains.
