Monsignor Charewicz of Taos surveys the interior of the new Our Lady of Guadalupe church that will be dedicated Sunday. The $250,000 structure will receive its blessing from Santa Fe Archbishop Edwin Vincent Byrne starting at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Stephen A. Mitchell traveled to the Kansas City area last week to deliver public papers to the Truman Library collections. He met with Mr. Truman, described as warm and peppery, and discussed New Mexico. Mitchell plans to tape record interviews for the library depository, noting connections to Taos and the Taosenos. The library director Philip Brooks and muralist Thomas Hart Benton figure in the piece.
The State Game Commission will consider raises for about 150 department employees. Most would gain roughly 40 dollars per month with bigger boosts for higher level posts, raising the salary ceiling and enabling 3 to 4 additional annual raises in the future. Immediate annual cost around 60,000 dollars.
December celebrations in New Mexico blend Indian dances and Spanish traditions with Anglo Christmas. At Zuni Pueblo the Shalako rite concludes harvest rituals with five giant figures visiting new dirt-floor homes at dusk. Other December observances include Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Tortugas Mountains near Las Cruces, Matachines dances at Jemez, and Christmas Eve processions at Taos and Isleta. Santa Fe glows with luminarias and Nativity scenes, while Santa Claus lights up Albuquerque and the Rio Grande pueblos host posadas and gift-filled ollas, all highlighting a vivid, multifaceted Yuletide season.
The local LULAC chapter hosts a turkey shoot at 1 pm on Dee 23 behind the delve-in theater, with prizes including turkeys and chickens for .22 rifle shooters. The prior Nov 18 event drew about 60 despite noisy weather and the Christmas shoot is by popular demand.
Raymond Burr, star of Perry Mason, is reported in excellent condition today after undergoing internal surgery at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. Medical officials confirmed a smooth recovery with Burr resting comfortably.
