A new public charter high school to use expeditionary learning aims to open in fall 2007 in Taos County led by Roots and Wings founder Todd Wynward. The 80 student class plans a $1 million campus near the Taos Youth Collaborative to offer a safe, engaging, project based curriculum and keep students in public schools. A public meeting is set for December 16 at the Taos Civic Plaza Rio Grande Room.
Taos County Adult Detention Center Director Charlene Tsoodle Marcus remains on paid leave as an administrative hearing drags after one commissioner abstained. The hearing, chaired by County Manager Sammy Pacheco, was recessed as motions for an impartial officer and court reporter were renewed. Human Resources Director Jim Dennis and attorney Jonlyn Martinez represent the case. Dennis led an internal probe after over $3,000 in inmate funds went missing, while police found no suspects.
Alfred and Diana Arellano face a delayed trial on meth lab charges after their Costilla home was raided May 6 by Taos County deputies following an anonymous tip. They maintain innocence as the case remains postponed due to prior attorney medical leave.
Lynn Anderson of Taos celebrates a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album for The Bluegrass Sessions on DM Records. Announcement came Tuesday in Hollywood after a manager call, marking her first nom since 1974 Top of the World. She calls it amazing and "Old Chicks, New Tricks" mirrors her view of the project.
Deputy Lori Garcia escaped injury when a shooter fired at her patrol car along State Road 68 near mile marker 34 before 10 p.m. on December 1. State Police have taken over the investigation. Garcia called the incident scary and remains on administrative leave amid ongoing inquiries.
