Nelson seeks Baton District Judge appointment

Taos public defender Peggy Nelson announced at a November bar association luncheon that she will seek the vacancy left by Leon Karlitz as District Judge in the Eighth Judicial District. The Judicial Selection Committee will meet December 19 in Santa Fe to interview candidates and report to Governor Garvey Carruthers. Nelson, backed by local bar associations and Taos officials, faces political dynamics with Carruthers likely favoring Republican nominees. If appointed, the public defender role would be bid, and Nelson may need to resign from the Taos School Board, triggering an interim appointment process.

Gonzales vows to stay active in politics after suspended sentence

Former State Senator Gonzales of Taos Mora and Santa Fe counties draws a line between conviction and ambition. Santa Fe Judge Bruce Kaufman gave him an 18 month suspended prison term for false imprisonment involving a 21 year old legislative aide in 1985. Gonzales cannot vote or run for office but plans to aid community efforts, seek grants, and help elect others while pursuing future political activity.
