BLM to Map Rio Grande Corridor From San Luis to Velarde

Americorps volunteers assist Rio Grande planning effort

Nine Americorps workers, four women and five men from the East Coast, support a 96 mile Rio Grande planning project in New Mexico. They work 40 hours weekly at $4.25 per hour under the Taos Bureau of Land Management. Michelle Chavez notes their housing and educational backgrounds. They supplement wages with second jobs while officials meet with the public.

Ranchos de Taos man dies in blaze blamed on faulty flue

Jose Maestas, 61, was found unconscious inside his Ranchos de Taos home and died of smoke inhalation after a fire sparked by a faulty fireplace flue. Fire officials reported no smoke detector, two fires in three weeks point to flue issues, and a neighbor warned of possible explosion from a nearby propane tank.
