Fire Destroys Range Land as Taos Pueblo Brush Fire Grows
A massive brush fire roared across Taos Pueblo range land Saturday creating a 360 foot smoke plume seen from Rio Grande Gorge. Dozens of homes were evacuated and two highways closed as Taos Pueblo Fire Department and neighboring departments fought the blaze. Fire chief Frank Marcus said near Chris Jiron's home the fire was nearly under control before it reignited and a 1000 yard fire line formed. Fire marshal Jim Fambro called it the largest brushfire he recalls and cited arson as the cause while Snowballs and multiple departments battled the fast moving flames.

Taos Town Council approved an 80 space parking lot lease on less than one acre of Irv Couse’s pasture at Kit Carson Road Quesnel and Montoya streets for 500 per year. The project includes four foot sidewalks planters lower speed limits drainage and new lighting with construction phased to minimize business disruption. The lease runs through June 30 1997 with a six month renewal option and Couse can cancel after year one with three months notice.

CASDV staffers charged after refusing to hand over client Slee
Debbie McCann and Siena Sanderson of Community Against Sexual and Domestic Violence were arrested Monday for obstructing a police officer after they refused a court-ordered disclosure of client Slee records. Bail set at 500 each. CASDV defends client confidentiality and said records remain confidential without written consent or court order. Assistant district attorney Shawn Boyne said she obtained a search warrant and court order, and CASDV still refused to comply.
