Taos Police Warn Care Could Prevent Crime Spree

Taos police chief Jose Lucero urged residents to take precautions after a string of thefts including a car, tools, a bike, and a dog. A 1977 Oldsmobile Toronado was stolen Aug. 7 from Jayce Maxwell, later recovered by an Albuquerque officer. Suspects Don Hill and Woody Deardon are jailed in Taos County. Tools valued around $1,000 vanished from The Plumbers, a bike disappeared from Don Fernando Lane, and a husky named Chaco was taken from a locked car on Bent Street. Police note the ease of these crimes and the investigative difficulty.

Taos Tribal Administrator resigns over electric project dispute

Taos Pueblo administrator Tony Martinez says his convictions forced his Aug 8 resignation over a directive to bring electric service to areas once prohibited. Tribal officials claim poor performance and say he was asked to quit. The council had approved power around Suazo’s home area years earlier. Average wage-earner can't afford a Taos house

Taos County residents face a stark gap between income and home prices. The average weekly wage of about 260 dollars cannot support even a modest 27 thousand dollar home, and MLS figures place county prices around 82 to 108 thousand dollars, far above the dream of a 20 year fixed rate mortgage.
