Armantrout Set as Taos Chamber Manager in Working Role

Betty Armantrout was officially named Taos County Chamber of Commerce manager and will work actively to streamline the chamber. A central reservations system for Taos lodges and Western Union service at the chamber will launch soon to boost tourism and serve local business interests.

Area firefighters join in national effort

More than 250 area firefighters joined thousands nationwide battling fires across Washington Oregon and California. Carson National Forest reports 10 Southwest Forest Fire Fighters with 20 men each plus 54 overhead and a helitack crew are deployed to Okanagan Wenatchee Klamath and Los Padres National Forests. Most fires in Los Padres have burned about 24 000 acres. lightning is blamed in many cases. Local crews' transfer raises concern over capacity to fight local blazes as rains lessen but danger remains moderate to high and forest users urged to exercise extreme caution.

Taos Seepage Forces Sewer Moratorium On Hookups

Taos Town Council halted all new sewer hookups after water seepage in lines built before 1960 doubled daily plant inflow. A $60,000 EPA grant will fund an infiltration analysis, involving survey work and possibly camera inspections to locate leaks and determine plant expansion needs.

Taos Police Logs Chronicle Aug Vandalism and Thefts

A series of police calls from Taos through Aug 6 record vandalism thefts and disturbances around the Plaza and local venues including Donn Davies Ace Chevron and Kachina Lodge. Officers traced cases of DWI curfew violations property damage and obstruction of movement, with multiple reports on Aug 2 3 and 5.

Arrest Pending After Lab Report In Murky Burglary String

Taos County Sheriff Felipe Cordova said an arrest in two burglaries at Gibson's Department Store is pending state crime lab results. Goods from the latest break in were examined at the Santa Fe lab with prints expected to match those from the July 15 burglary. The store fell victim twice in less than two weeks with thieves taking firearms jewelry cameras and ammunition. About nine percent of the stolen goods have been recovered.
