The economic value of hunting and fishing in New Mexico for the license year ended March 31, 1980, exceeds 30 million dollars. Residents and nonresidents together spent 18.36 million on hunters and 20.72 million on fishermen, with nonresident totals 1.41 million and 0.89 million respectively. The 1959 60 year used similar calculations, totaling 41.3 million. Cantonment Burgwin Fort Study Near Taos
Ten miles south of Taos on the Rancho del Rio Grande Grant a new fort like site is under study to examine past inhabitants. Fred Wendorf of the New Mexico Museum leads the Cantonment Burgwin project begun from 1852 army forts for Taos protection against Utes and Jicarilla Apaches. It closed in 1960 after eight years of conflicts, and the Fort Burgwin Research Center will open to the public this summer, named for Captain Burgwin whose Taos defense heroism is recounted in the accompanying piece.

Archuleta seaman first class of the U S Navy returned to Long Beach California aboard the Pacific Fleet destroyer USS Preston after a six month Western Pacific tour with the Seventh Fleet. The ship joined U S Nationalist Chinese forces in Operation Blue Star providing antisubmarine protection during amphibious practice assaults on Formosa and also took part in Sea Lion with SEA TO. It visited ports in Japan Okinawa and the Philippines.
