Crimestoppers Marks First Year With Record Rewards

Taos Crimestoppers, backed by Kiwanis and Taos Police, celebrates its first anniversary after police used hotline tips to locate an escapee from Taos County Jail and to end a spate of arson. The Albuquerque inspired program, created by Greg Macaleese, pays rewards for crime information.

Taos Crimestoppers gains ground with anonymous tips

Taos Crimestoppers, started by Kiwanis and Taos Police in spring 1978 and fully operating by July, now funds rewards through local donations. About $3,000 has been raised. $950 paid to tipsters who helped locate Claudio Fernandez and aid in the Abeyta arson case, with calls averaging 10 to 15 daily.

Taos County Plans First Draft of Land Use Plan

Taos County Planning Commission prepares the first draft of a comprehensive land use plan affecting all residents. Wilfred Gallegos and Jeri Vargas fill vacancies from resignations of Clarence Fernandez and Pat Sanchez. An advisory group with outside-area reps joins northern and southern voices, plus central representative Jack Suttle, to engage public input.

Clerk challenges checks in Taos County

County Clerk Francisco Gonzales cites state opinions to demand access to financial records and sign all county checks. He urged clearer lines of authority, with weekly meetings on disbursements, while the Commission and planning groups coordinate audits, public notices and local code reviews amid changes in the county's budgeting and planning processes.

Don Fernando de Taos Day Declares County Holiday

Taos County offices close for a new holiday named Don Fernando de Taos Day on the county employees calendar. Historical notes recall early settlers reaching Taos in 1615 and the area’s territorial status evolving through 1796 with Spanish crown deeds to 68 families.

Former Cerro man surprises attorney in court

Manuel Maria Martinez, 31, accused of aggravated assault with a 30.06 rifle in Cerro on August 10, 1878, appeared in District Judge John B. Wright's courtroom Monday. Public defender Chris Lucero requested a delay as Martinez, living in Colorado and without a phone, had not yet been located and a bond violation was noted for two recent Cerro visits. The judge did not revoke bond and reset the trial for September 4.

Minor barred from liquor venue ends in injury

Police report Martin Vargas says a 17 year old violated curfew at 1 a.m. Friday Aug 3. When Vargas refused entry, the girl hurled an ashtray and struck him, giving the Los Compadres owner a head wound. He was treated at Holy Cross Hospital with three stitches.
