Two men, Edel Magallanes age 20 of Llano Quemado and Ian Hoyer age 18 of Pilar, died in a head-on crash on State Road 68 near West Romero Road Friday evening. A white Oldsmobile Bravada driven by Magallanes reportedly swerved into the northbound lane, colliding with a white Dodge Durango carrying Los Alamos visitors. Several witnesses described near misses before the fatal impact, and Taos responders assisted at the scene.
Ian Hoyer, 18, died Friday in Ranchos after a crash that also killed Edel Magallanes, 20. Friends and family in Pilar and Chamisa Mesa honor his life with a party driven farewell, while planning a seed fund for a Chamisa Mesa music program.
Kit Carson Electric Cooperative board members scramble to counter a 13.8 percent electricity rate increase approved by Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association. The raise, effective Jan. 1, 2005, will cost consumers about $2 million annually and appear on February bills if protests fail. Tri-State serves Kit Carson and 43 other cooperatives in four Western states, citing insufficient operating funds.
After an internal audit at UNM Taos, Kate Mares associate director of student services is accused of nepotism and self benefiting acts. The review cites efforts to change her own grade assist relatives with aid approve late registration fund shirts for a Taos High team and travel voucher errors. Mares remains on administrative leave as UNM officials assess disciplinary steps.
