The Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s office and Sammy Pacheco face a grand jury probe sparked by a district court document filed Monday. The petition, signed by enough registered voters to meet state statute, convenes the first Taos County grand jury under this provision.
UNM researchers surveyed 8,000 residents in Taos and nearby communities to measure the Taos Hum impact. Of 1,440 respondents, 161 people or 11 percent report perceiving the hum, with symptoms including ear pressure, nosebleeds, dizziness and sleep disturbance.

Taos area residents gather as the Council of Neighborhood Associations defends its mission to unite communities and give residents a voice on land use and planning. A follow up meeting with planning staff is set for Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. in the commission chambers, with two representatives urged from each community and open attendance for all residents.
Picuris Pueblo faces a long-running fight over a special dispenser license for serving alcohol at the Pefiasco Fiestas. After Taos County Commission failed to maintain a permit, state liquor director Mary Ann Hughes reversed the decision Friday denying the license. The Sunday parade and later queen coronation at Martinez Hall proceed as organizers press on.
Eddie Padilla 48, a former Mormon church leader and Town of Taos employee, was arrested and charged with 35 counts of criminal sexual penetration and contact involving five girls under 13 over nine years. He pleaded not guilty, released on his own recognizance, and faces possible up to 150 years if convicted.
