In Taos progress toward a legal television booster station continues with FCC plans to license rebellious boosters from Sept. 6 under minimal technical rules. Taos officials, in collaboration with a committee and local TV stations, aim to establish a booster facility by year’s end to improve reception and channel viewing.
Taos County gains a vital link in the national air navigation system with a newly commissioned very high frequency omnidirectional range station located three miles southeast of Tres Piedras. Kit Carson Electric Co-Operative powers the facility, which uses a plastic cone atop a 110 foot building to house the VOR antenna broadcasting signals for instrument flight.
The Game Department secured a five year easement from Arthur R. McElreath Jr. that opens about a mile and half of the Red River above Aspen Park to public angling. Parking and fishing are allowed within 12 feet of the banks up to the main road crossing. only the east bank remains open beyond that. The department will install about 50 trash catchers this summer and stock trout similarly to other public waters. Stream improvements already exist below this property on National Forest land.
A dozen Boy Scouts from Explorer Post 98 guided about 600 scouts passing through Taos on their return from the Jamboree in Colorado Springs. Under post advisor Clark Funk the group toured Taos, boosting public relations with scouts from across the country. Visitors lodged 300 at the armory, 100 at the small gymnasium, 100 in Kit Carson Park, and the remainder in local hotels.
Taosenos join 41st Annual Department Convention of the American Legion and Auxiliary in Las Vegas New Mexico. About 1600 attendees from various areas enjoyed sessions lunches barbacue cocktails dances and a banquet. Notable participants included Mr and Mrs Felix Valdes Mr and Mrs Floyd Santistevan J E Flores and Philip Cantu Jr with Gov John Burroughs and Sen Dennis Chavez as speakers.
Ladies of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary dished box lunches for 72 patients at a three day Department for Public Welfare Eye Clinic. Participants included Eva R. Martinez chairwoman and nurses Eliza beth Budlong Alice Martinez and Glynis Ohlinger with Dr. Beaudette from Raton overseeing care. Eli Brown supervised the clinic for the welfare department. Half of attendees were children aided by Crippled Children's Service while adults received Public Assistance and Service for the Blind eye care.
Four Taos men Alfred M. Romero Robert A. Quintana Norberto R. Cordoba and Jose L. Lopez join 2,300 Army Reservists for a two week practice mobilization at Fort Chaffee Arkansas. The 95th Division trains non unit reservists from Oklahoma Texas Arkansas Louisiana and New Mexico to test processing equipping and training large numbers quickly.
The Taos Animal Shelter netted 446.17 from a two day Fiesta booth sales including contributions and memberships. The shelter notes additional silk screen prints and 18 original works of art are still available at local artists studios with all money from sales benefitting the shelter.
Cesario Trujillo, a Kit Carson Co-Op trustee from El Rito, faced a meter disconnection after 30 days without full payment of a $464 bill though he had reduced his total from $535. Linemen demanded $100 to avoid disconnection. Trujillo paid $25 and promised $75 later, with the policy to disconnect by serial number after the grace period.
A Wichita Kansas visitor, A. W. Sturgeon, was tossed from a summer ski lift at Red River while boarding, thrown into a guard rail, and treated for minor bruises. Witnesses linked the accident to his unusually heavy weight.
Henry Jiron age 60 of Taos Pueblo was fined 190 dollars for reckless driving in Taos on July 27. State Patrolman Andy Cordova arrested him. He entered a guilty plea to the charge.
Mrs. J. H. Hanlon announced this week that Hanlon Funeral Home and Ambulance Service will continue in business, aiming to keep high standards of sympathetic service. Joining her are son Clark and another son James, who recently returned from Albuquerque to assist after the sudden death of their father.

Miss Hearn, returning from a five week scholarship workshop at Denver University, met with 34 leaders in insurance, savings, and financial planning. The program, part of 16 nationwide sessions under the National Committee for Education in Family Finance, began in 1947 to equip teachers with current money management insights. Miss Hearn plans another scholarship funded Institute in U S History at Colorado University starting August.
Old-age, survivors and disability insurance paid 1,034 Taos Mountains and 42,051 New Mexico beneficiaries by year end 1959. National monthly benefits exceeded $10 billion annually. average retiree, couple and widow payments are cited. Silver Anniversary remarks mark benefits growth since 1940.

Robert Gonzales, 17, of Penasco was fined 100 dollars and placed on strict probation after Juvenile Court action on July incident alleging reckless driving. He received 30 days in county jail, suspended if he keeps traffic laws for two years, pays the fine, and ceases driving for one year. Drivers under 18 face Juvenile Court action in traffic cases.
Six guns valued at about 8300 were taken from Wield Hardware and Furniture Co last Wednesday night. Authorities have no definite clues on the thieves. Suspects entered through a skylight at the front and exited via a rear window. Stolen items include a 3208 two 30-30 rifles a .410 shotgun and two 22 rifles.
Two mechanics from Bill Miller's Chevrolet Co attended a five day Denver course to keep in touch with latest advances in automobile repair. Charles Morine and Jimmy Bowen specialized in 1961 Oldsmobile transmission techniques.
Gonzalo Gallegos, an itinerant worker living at Medina Apartments, faces charges in Taos for illegal possession of marijuana found in a bag of asha roots. Investigators Mares and Quintana arrested him. he pleaded not guilty before Judge Flores, with a $2,000 bond and a preliminary hearing set for August 10.
Taos Countians bought 29,050.27 in Series E and H Savings Bonds in the first half of 1940, reaching 52.06 percent of the 75,000 county goal. County Bonds Chairman Jack Brandenburg announced the totals. statewide first half purchases reached 7,192,470.93, up 1.60 percent from last year, while June state purchases fell to 1,082,239.58, down 6.5 percent from June last year.
Donald Oliver Holtzman of Independence Missouri died while visiting Taos in front of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Officials say death was due to apparent heart failure. He was transported to Holy Cross by Garcia's ambulance and pronounced dead on arrival. He will be buried in Independence.
One hundred sixty members of the International Congress of Soil Scientists are expected in Taos on Aug. 31. The scientists from almost every country will lunch here and tour Taos Pueblo before leaving, according to Phil Lovato, unit conservationist.
Kenneth Wayne Roggow, 27, of Las Vegas pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was fined 100 dollars. He was arrested by State Patrolman Andy Cordova for an incident on State Road on June 28 after a prior indecent exposure sentence. Mrs Lugarda Gibson and daughter Loretta returned to Las Vegas New Mexico after visiting Fiesta events and the Denver Ballet Center.
