Outcry Over Exhumation At Kit Carson Cemetery

Beverly Armijo of Ranchos de Taos condemns the removal of a body from the Kit Carson Cemetery to make room for Squires. She fears the bones may be those of her great grandfather Juan Luis Sandoval, who died in 1938. Jail executive fired by Taos County administrator

Walter Herrera, jail administrator, was terminated by Taos County Administrator Ambrose Mascarefias on Thursday July 25. Mascarefias said the decision aimed to hire someone closer to him and claimed it was unrelated to drugs or alcohol issues at the jail. Herrera, an exempt employee, had filled the role since February after Mascarefias left the post. Mascarefias plans to seek an $18,000 a year replacement, likely within weeks, after discussing with county commissioners. Herrera previously resigned as magistrate judge in 1990 amid misconduct proceedings. He has not yet commented, but plans a future statement.
