Jail executive fired by Taos County administrator
Walter Herrera, jail administrator, was terminated by Taos County Administrator Ambrose Mascarefias on Thursday July 25. Mascarefias said the decision aimed to hire someone closer to him and claimed it was unrelated to drugs or alcohol issues at the jail. Herrera, an exempt employee, had filled the role since February after Mascarefias left the post. Mascarefias plans to seek an $18,000 a year replacement, likely within weeks, after discussing with county commissioners.
