The Keep America Beautiful campaign in Taos receives a $5,000 grant from the Town of Taos and a matching $5,000 from Centinel Bank to hire a part-time beautification coordinator. Martin Romero of Centinel Bank cites the project as essential to Taos's future.
Taos and the Taos County Chamber of Commerce stage a town wide cleanup Saturday May 2 with rakes shovels and trash bags at the Taos Community Auditorium Painting will be on the agenda Mayor Eloy Jeantete urges residents and businesses to join in. Taos trucks will collect bagged leaves and branches in designated areas for calls to 751-2012 Trash bags available by calling Gary Beimer at 758-4160. The program is run with Keep America Beautiful New Mexico Beautiful and a chamber committee chaired by Susan Vernon to educate and promote beautification in Taos.
Taos town manager Gus Cordova reports strong tourist arrivals but weaker spending. Lodgers’ tax soars to 346,740 while gross receipts tax lags, signaling visitors spend mainly on food and lodging. Budget for 1992-93 stands at 13.8 million plus 7.6 million capital outlay. state tax cuts loom. Council hires a zoning enforcer and approves scraper rental for yard and road work.
Indicted county commissioner David Fernandez, 43, appeared without an attorney on Monday April 27 triggering a vacating of the arraignment. Judge Joseph Caldwell recused himself and Judge Peggy Nelson also recused, delaying the proceedings. Fernandez faces three fourth degree felonies including embezzlement of public funds bribery of an officer and fraudulent use of a county credit card. If convicted on all counts he could face up to 4.5 years in prison and fines up to 15000 dollars. The New Mexico attorney general's office plans to seek a new judge and arraignment date. Fernandez, who earns 10000 annually as a county commissioner, said he has not decided on requesting court-appointed counsel. He plans to review rescheduling and possible defense motions to dismiss.
Taos High School principal Gil Archuleta describes priorities for a stable learning climate amid rapid change. He stresses safety to shield students and teachers from interruptions while balancing curriculum expansion with discipline. Archuleta, a Taos native, recalls a Dodger fan story and his long tenure since Taos High opened in 1967.
