Pupils from third through sixth grade practice marbles with aggies crockies and shooters for an elimination tourney. Homeroom champs and runners-up earn a chance at the Taos Elementary School Marble Championship Tourney with deadlines May 7 for prelims and May 21 for the final. trophies await winners and runners-up.

Names range from families such as the Martinez and Chavez clans to institutions like Taos Kiwanis and Taos Municipal Schools, reflecting a community-wide acknowledgment across multiple sectors.
Loewedown will relinquish coaching duties next year with Tom Martinez a possible successor and Rudy Garcia becoming Taos Education Association president next month. John Solis will oversee next year's municipal athletic program. County districts petition for joining Taos Municipal School system as consolidation grows amid merger options with Rio Arriba districts or forming independent districts.
A community event schedule lists a noon buffet luncheon in the Sagebrush dining room followed by a 5 to 7 30 p.m. Spanish dinner at Ranchos Presbyterian Church and an 8 p.m. Bandelier Lecture at Harwood Foundation. Sunday features a 9 a.m. field trip to Picuris excavations from Sagebrush to San Juan Pueblo, preceded by Miss Helen Blumenschein’s talk on history and archaeological background of Taos Valley.
Disabled American Veterans plan a picnic Sunday May 1 at Taos Junction Bridge if weather permits. If not, the group will meet at Kit Carson Park Shelter. Espanola Santa Fe and Taos members are invited to attend.
Governor Campbell signs into law three bills affecting Sunland and Water Conservation Districts in New Mexico. Key provisions include an $80,000 watershed planning appropriation to be routed to the Soil Conservation Service, inclusion of recreation in watershed district purposes, authority to spend outside district boundaries, and a rewritten Soil and Water Conservation District Act expanding scope to soil water wildlife and related resources.
Principal Valerio testified he struck four or five students after three warnings to control a disorderly class he was covering. He said four to five others were hit for indirect involvement, including his own daughter, and denied a pupil stayed home. He warned of threats to teachers and urged board support amid juvenile crime in Arroyo Seco.
A public poster announces a May 1 Veterans of Foreign Wars event featuring a Valley Forge themed portrayal of General George Washington. The demonstration includes parades flag ceremonies and speeches to rededicate American ideals.
At Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron on April 24-25 adult South workers attended the annual Spring training. Certificates and recognition patches were awarded to attendees including Rusty Richardson of Post 3350 Fire Explorer Unit, James Fuller of Troop 98 Lion's Club Unit, Elizabeth Fuller of Pack 98 Lion's Club Cub Pack 612, the American Legion Cub post from Penasco, Bob Arooks Taos District Commissioner, Lawrence Shearsmith Inns District Advancement Chairman, and Kurt Ziebarth Taos District Training Chairman.
Mrs. Maria Rosita Duran 72 died April 24 at Presbyterian Hospital Embudo. Funeral today at 10 at Rodarte Catholic Chapel with Rev. Father Wilkenson officiating. Burial in Fresquez Cemetery Rodarte. Survivors include son Amadeo Fresquez and multiple daughters and siblings. Pallbearers named. Rosary recited April 27 at family home and April 28 at Garcia's Funeral Home.
Ruben Trujillo, 90, of Las Cordovas, died April 22 at Holy Cross Hospital. A requiem Mass led by Rev. John McHugh occurred April 24 at San Isidro Chapel. Burial followed at Penas Negras Cemetery. Survivors include sons Josue M and Frank F. Santa Cruz, Ralph, Adolfo, and Ruben E., Las Cordovas. Henry, Pueblo. Cole, and Juan M., El Paso. daughter Eloy T. Pacheco, Denver. 20 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Burial arrangements by Garcia Funeral Home.
California consulting engineer Ernest W. Ilse, 50, died from injuries after a collision between a car and a horse on April 22 while returning to Taos from Arroyo Seco. B. Waples, also a consultant, said the buckskin yearling horse jumped into the road. The horse was killed. Ilse died at Holy Cross Hospital from a probable broken neck.
Taos Municipal School Board meeting was cancelled at the request of Supt. Joseph L. Otero. He had planned to resign but decided to stay after many residents and teachers urged him to remain in the post.
A large wood fire occurred at 1 p.m. last Thursday behind the Paul Casias bar in Ranchos. Firemen battled the flames for about three hours using over 3,000 gallons of water. Damage to the woodpile and an adjoining shed was estimated by a Taos Volunteer Fire Department spokesman at bed and $100 respectively.
Trout season starts May 1 as streams run high and muddy in the area per Game and Fish Department officer Carl Berghofer. Roads will stay closed on upper San Antonio creek near Tres Piedras if snow lingers. Cabresia Hopewell and Latir Lakes fords open mid May. Streams stocked with nine to ten inch rainbows. Rio Grande river has small brown fry. Worms are recommended bait.
