Jim Stary of New Mexico led a health service environmental division test at Pioneer Logging and Milling Co. The tests ran from 2:34 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. at 15 second intervals. The period average observed was No. 214 on the Ringle.
Wilbert Lopez leads Penasco High in 1971 track with high jump records of 5 ft 11 in and broad jump 19 ft 2 in. He runs 20 yd dash in 23.5 and competes in relays. Expected to win 2AA district high jump and reach state meet with teammates Ray Rodarte and others.
Taos County Sheriff Eddie Montoya praises regional Policy Board member Ralph Kopansky for speeding up equipment upgrades and training. He cites a November 1970 meeting that led to car purchases, an administrator, and academy training for officers, with three new cars delivered at the courthouse.
A memorial at Angel Fire for Marine Lt. Ist. Lt. David Westphall, killed in Vietnam in May 1968, will be formally dedicated May 22. The 120 by 60 foot cross structure, built by Dr. Vice of Albuquerque, will house an eternal flame and rotate photographs of 12 other Marines. Architect Ted Luna designed the memorial with veteran help, War Mothers from Taos will serve coffee, and no admission fee will be charged though donations are welcome.
Taos Chapter of the American Red Cross launches a drive set at 1400 dollars. Local chair Manuel A. Garcia notes the war’s unpopularity but stresses the chapter as the link between servicemen and families, recalling aid to over 150 Taos families last year. The drive ends April 30.
Al Cortez began at Molycorp in 1966 as a heavy equipment operator after graduating from Questa High School. In under a year he became mine shovel foreman and soon supervised the entire pit area. Now in charge of more than 50 workers, he balances work with hobbies in landscape painting and skiing.
