Strike ends as Kit Carson Electric workers return to jobs

The 34 day walkout by Local 611 IBEW at Kit Carson Electric Cooperative ended April 19 with a three year contract. Workers were set to return April 26 after board approval on April 25. The pact includes 3.25 percent first year and up to 4.5 percent increases tied to performance, full health insurance in year one, and shared costs later, plus four safety shirts in year one and cost sharing in years two and three. The co op serves 20,000 customers in Taos and parts of Rio Arriba and Colfax counties.

Taos Little League Opens Amid Weather Cancellations

Elmer Martinez protects his children Mat thew and Leandra in the dugout after Saturday’s T-ball game was canceled by severe weather. More than 300 attended Taos Little League opening ceremonies at Filemon Sanchez Park with Taos County commissioners officiating and awarding raffle prizes. Games will be rescheduled. Little League has a 30 year Taos tradition made possible by the commissioners who maintain the fields.

Gravel pit loophole found in Taos temporary zoning ordinance

Taos County planners reported a loophole as the new temporary zoning ordinance may not control a gravel pit and rock crushing operation. About 26 homes lie within a one mile radius around the site, including Riverview Acres and part of Stagecoach Hills. The noxious uses ban was dropped after strong opposition from the sand and gravel industry.

Taos selects architects for 32 acre affordable housing plan

Taos Town Council on April 18 chose Albuquerque firm de la Torre Rainhart led by Jorge de la Torre to draft a master plan for 125 home Taos families on a 32 acre site between Cruz Alta Road and Paseo del Cayion. The project area previously changed zoning to R 3 from R 2 and C 1 with a budget of 100000 to 125000 for planning.

Taos Junior High action plan unveiled by board

Taos School officials charge to curb violence and boost education quality at Taos Junior High. Supt. Juan Aragon will craft a three part plan focusing on staff and education quality, at risk youth and gang violence, and integrating sixth grade into the junior high when ninth grade moves to the high school in fall 1996. New board president Bob Romero said the stipulations are tied to Aragon’s one year contract amid public concerns.

Elegant Taos artist Ila McAfee dies in Colorado

Ila McAfee, renowned Taos artist known for mystical horse paintings, died April 18 in Pueblo at 97. Born in Saguache County in 1897, she studied in Chicago and New York, married Elmer Turner during a Colorado-Mexico journey, and settled in Taos where they built the Horse Studio before his 1966 death.
