Elaine Querry reports no charges will be pressed against one grade school and 14 junior high students after after school clashes April 15 and 16 near Taos Junior High. Principal Dan Velasquez warns suspensions, police note possible two groups, large crowd and hazardous conditions observed.
The National Weather Service says expect breezy afternoons with temperatures above normal. Highs in the 60s to 70s and cooler nights in the 40s to 80s range. Overnight lows will vary, with unsettled timing through the weekend.
Rio Costilla Ski Area changed hands in a Thursday sale to Mitch Brown of San Francisco for 205000 dollars. The district court auction saw Brown bidding for the land with a temporary loan from Malcolm Bailey while a bank letter of credit was prepared. Poma of America bought the three ski lifts for 300000 dollars, and Brown may negotiate their sale back to the new owner as Rio Costilla Inc. and Rio Costilla Company plan new financing and development.
Hospital board in Taos discussed finance and management contract with Taos Management Company Inc led by Ernest Romero. Meeting Monday April 21 covered cash controls and replacing Romero’s IBM computer with a larger model owned by the hospital. Romero reported staff frustration over lack of communication and vowed regular meetings to share information with Mercy Lucero of the PPA and others.
Mayor Lawrence Santistevan considers a special election to fill the Council seat after the death of former Mayor Phil Lovato. Clerk Josephine Gonzales estimates timing between late August and early September, with costs and schedules not yet set.
A suspension and potential revocation hearing for Ski Valley Junction's liquor license was postponed to Wednesday April 30. ABC director Abe Rodriguez suspended the license February 7 amid claims it was obtained under false pretenses by Richard Rowand and CRW Development Corp. Rowand's attorney Charles Rawson was disqualified for representing Andrea Sanchez, former license owner. The hearing will be held at the PERA Building in Santa Fe at 9 a.m.
Taos man Ted Trujillo is indicted on seven counts of sex abuse involving a seven year old girl. He faces six counts of criminal sexual penetration across incidents in September, November, December, and February and one count of criminal sexual contact in November. He is free on $20,000 bond and ordered not to contact the victim or her mother.
Luis Pena, 20, of La Madera has been indicted for vehicular homicide in the May 11 death of Vanessa R. Hamilton, 28, of Carson. He faces charges of reckless or drunk driving and child abuse for placing his two year old daughter Monica in a life threatening situation after the collision. Monica suffered a head injury.
The Richard Edwards murder case returns Friday at 3 p.m. with motions including venue change and suppression of a confession. Attorney Chris Key says Taosenos are polled by Zia Research to support the venue motion, and he seeks to suppress Edwards’s confession from police. Edwards is charged with first degree murder in the May 1985 Vigil killing near Rock Wall on the Rio Pueblo during fishing. A June trial is scheduled.
