The gathering discussed police roadblock legality, driver licenses, and potential remedies for local injustices. Walker urged lawful actions while fundraising began for a lawyer to assist residents, and participants urged calm, understanding, and respect for rights as investigations continue.
Frustrated audience at a public event expected program completion. An unidentified man spoke to the Governor then stepped away when the program continued. State Police spoke to him as he departed. The Ojo Caliente Scheu Bord members and guests, led by president Fabijan Garcia and directed by John Romero, enjoyed music from the Northern New Mexico State School Band. The Governor praised the drummer as he departed saying that girl on drums is really good.
The Second conversation in a four part series on hippies and drugs will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Tats. About 40 attended the first session which explored alienation as a cause. The series, part of the church youth ministry, invites youth and adults to join.
Mrs Leslie Brawn is back from five months travel covering New England, North Carolina, Florida, Guatemala and Mexico. She visited her son Erik and family in Ambhoret Illinois then Duke University in Durham North Carolina to see brother sculptor Angus McDougall, before flying to Miami and Guatemala City with a Mayan site visit to Tikal. She also toured Mexico City, Cuernavaca and San Miguel Allende.
Records show licenses issued for Raymond Edward Torres of EL Rito and Jane Lopez of Taos, Jeorare Cordova of San Cristobal and Victoria Ramires of Taos, Joseph William Romero of Vadito and Cecilia Miera of Penasco. District Court cases include a petition for a licensed operation of a motor vehicle and a state case against Benjamin Trupita for selling alcohol to a minor, and a magistrate appeal by Francis Sanches on resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Chamisal native Tae cheen Pacheco, son of Mr. and Mrs. One time Pacheco, was promoted to sergeant in the Army on March 19. He serves in Chu Lia, Vietnam, after enlisting in the Army.
Funeral services were held Wednesday for Joe J. Manzanares 58 who died April 19 in Costilla. A self employed school bus driver and member of several associations, he lived all his life in the area. Rev. Leo Courcey officiated at Sacred Heart Church Costilla with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rosaries were held April 21 at San Martin Chapel and April 22 at the family home in Castilla. He is survived by his wife Mary Lucy two children in Los Angeles and several relatives. Pallbearers included Juan Ortiz Joe J Tafoya Eddie Cordova and others. Garcia Funeral Home arranged the services.
Two Taos students at New Mexico Military Institute have cadet promotions per Maj. Gen. Sam W. Agee, superintendent. Joe M. Perovich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marko Perovich, advances to sergeant while John D. Martinez, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Martinez, is promoted to private first class.
Maria Concepcion Garcia died April 12 at Holy Cross Hospital at age 47. Ranchos de Taos residents attended services April 15 at Sant Francisco de Assisi Church with burial at Llano Quemado Cemetery. Survived by father Rosalia Mondragon husband Richard Garcia children Benny Mondragon Anselita Mondragon and others. pallbearers named.
Joseph Michael Mermejo, 19, the first Bat. Marine from Picuris Pueblo to die in the Vietnam War, received a hero’s burial at the pueblo cemetery after vigilant military rites. A rosary preceded the service at his Marine home in Picuris with Garcia Funeral Home in Taos in charge. Six Albuquerque Marine detachment pallbearers and a guard of honor led by T Sgt T D DeChateau accompanied the body through transit with Cpl Lorenzo Jaramillo as military escort.
A letter to James Dillard, director of the State Parks and Recreation Commission, expresses support for improvements at Kit Carson Memorial State Park funded by a legislature-approved state bond issue.
