County To Share In Million Dollar Scout Camp
The Kit Carson Council of the Boy Scouts of America filed an application with the Bureau of Land Management for 4,617 acres of federal land in Taos and Rio Arribas counties near Penasco to establish a nearly $1 million Boy Scout reservation. The plan includes a multi-phase camp with housing, dining, training, and conservation areas, serving about 4,800 scouts with future expansion potential. The site, between 7,100 and 9,000 feet, lies near Truchas Peak and features forested terrain and Rio Pueblo coursing nearby.

Las Vegas Edges Tigers in Narrow Track Duel
The Taos High School Tiger track team lost to West Las Vegas 7714 to 684 in a dual meet on Saturday April 17. Paul Marling set a school two mile record with WL minutes 25 seconds while the relay team of Dave McLendon Francis Cordova Larry Herrera and George Proctor ran the 440 in 48 seconds. Francis Cordova Benny Mondragon placed second and third in the 100 yard dash. Ronni Kennon and Jake Luran won first and second in the high hurdles. Coach Pacheco noted West Las Vegas placed fourth in the general meet while Taos placed eighth. Snowed out at Dulce last weekend the team will compete today in a re scheduled meet. On April 25 they will participate in the Northern New Mexico College Invitational Track Meet at El Rito.

State Catfish Stocking Sets World Of Freshwater Test
About 6,000 channel catfish averaging six per pound were stocked by the Department of Game and Fish on April 3. Five hundred pounds went to Black River, 250 to Berrendo Creek, and 260 to Pasture Inkwell and Cottonwood lakes in Bottomless Lakes State Park. Earlier planting occurred in lower Pecos River. Another 6,000 pounds are planned for Ute Lake Carlsbad Municipal Lake Clark Lake and other Pecos areas and Rio Felix. Fish come from Texas federal hatcheries at no cost beyond hauling. Twenty percent are tagged. biologists and anglers return data via tags. The program relies on many tags to gauge success.
