The Department of the Interior proposes revising the code governing rights-of-way on Indian lands. It would remove advisory material, add more authorities, and shift conveyance methods to modern deeds. Public comments welcomed to the Bureau of Indian Affairs within 30 days of notice.
Taos officials hear opposing views on site choice for the courthouse. Sanchez argues a downtown Plaza draw remains essential, while Bernal warns moving could harm business and shopper traffic. Sanchez notes government offices could be downtown yet downtown businesses still lose shoppers.
District 1 candidates Ar thur Archuleta James Duran Gus Fernandez Andres Martinez Taffy Sandoval Ernest Santistevan and John de Vergas compete with Archuleta and Fernandez incumbents. District 2 incumbents Marcelino Martinez and Malaquias Rael unopposed. Taos County sponsors meet-your-candidate session May 5 at 7 30 p.m. in the courthouse. election May 9 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Central Catholic School Taos and Questa High School.
In Taos 80 people gathered as Henry Hough presented a book of letters from Indian tribes and prominent non Indians thanking John Collier for his work. Collier received the tribute modestly calling it a happy day as the All Pueblo Council honors his efforts against the Bursum Bill and supports Pueblo culture.
Reynolds of the Taos District warns continued violations will trigger heavier penalties and publication of names. The Game and Fish Department says new licenses are available statewide from April 1 through March 31, 1968, with licenses and regulations shared with vendors and churches in various communities.
The Los Cordovas Community Group vows to fight if needed to obtain the deed to the old Los Cordovas School House and surrounding land. Board officials will consult the attorney before deciding, weighing whether to deed to an unincorporated group while considering incorporation steps.
Police continue the burglary investigation with no suspects yet identified. Fingerprints from the scene have been sent to the FBI for possible identification, and no estimate of the stolen jewelry value has been provided.
Two Taos County soldiers Pvt Joseph Vissaraga 19 Penasco and Pvt Thomas Martinez 19 Taos completed a seven week vehicle mechanic course at Ft Huachuca Arizona. They trained to repair internal combustion engines and wheeled vehicle chassis components. Martinez is son of Mr and Mrs Eddie Martinez of Taos.
Around & About John Petty travels to O Keip in Cape Province with Newmont Mining Co. Mrs Petty and daughter Dee plan to join him in early June, sailing from New York on the Queen Elizabeth and then to South Africa via Union Castle Line. Dee graduates from Colorado College May 29. Easter visitors in town include Helen Duncan, the Walleyes of Woodland Park, Caraven of Idaho Springs, and Mrs. Rackley of Santa Fe. Frances Crane and Alice Bullock visit Taos Sunday.

Defense claims orders to place temporary stone piles, while a surveyor finds no monuments or center marker. Evidence shows failure to check delinquent tax rolls and meet residency and ownership requirements. Trial opened in county courthouse.
ISPRING report notes snow depth at Taos Ski Valley near half of last year with 15.9 inches versus 34.0 inches and water content down to 5.0 inches from 11.1. Fernandez states about 61 percent of seasonal runoff comes from winter snow pack and current depths indicate limited spring runoff.
Jacqueline Bachels, coordinator for Questa and Penasco Head Start, says the County Community Action Program will not import teachers for the eight month county project. Local staff are being sought in Penasco and Questa, with outside candidates only if local teachers are unavailable. The CAP board will hire administrative help, and project start awaits funding and Office of Economic Opportunity approval.
Forsythia jonquils and tulips brighten the plaza park as lilacs are expected next month. The Taos Garden Club continues its beautification project in the area.
