Sign Up For Feed Program Starts
Andres A. Martinez, chairman, County Stabilization and Conservation Committee, announced the 1961 Feed Grain Program sign up. Farmers may file their Intentions to participate in the remaining weeks of April to receive up to half the earned payment upon signup. The one year emergency program aims to bolster farm income and stabilize prices while reducing taxpayer costs and limiting feed grain surpluses.

Jose Manuel Rael Arroyo Hondo businessman and leader dies
Jose Manuel Rael a well known Arroyo Hondo business man and former Taos County official died April 16 at Holy Cross Hospital after a lengthy illness. He owned the Rio Hondo Post for many years and served two terms as county assessor in 1932 and 1936, was deputy assessor in 1940 and 1941, and was a long time Woodmen of the World member. Surviving relatives include a step mother, wife, seven daughters, seven brothers, and a foster daughter. Funeral services were held at Arroyo Hondo Parish church with burial in Lower Cemetery under Garcia's Funeral Home. Rosary recited Sunday and Monday at Garcia Chapel. Pallbearers listed. honorary pallbearers named. Eulogy by Jacobo Bernal. An earthquake relief note from March 1933 is included.

Taos Pueblo is listed as an exemplar of Spanish rule resistance and the 1680 Pueblo Revolt as part of the National Park Service Registry of Historic Landmarks. Fishing Is Good At Conchas Lake
Conchas Lake is full of water and fish says Conservation Officer Dave Seymour. Three fishermen last week landed 58 crappies with a limit of a few per person. Another pair fished two days and caught 32 channel catfish and eight crappies. Water spills seven inches through the spillway and rainbow trout have been stocked below the dam’s stilling basin.

Eight Taos High School Key Club members traveled to Yuma Arizona for the annual district meeting. Wool growers are reminded that May is the deadline to file for wool incentive payments under the National Wool Incentive Program. Producers who marketed shorn wool or unshorn lambs during the 1960 Marketing Year must bring sales records to the local county ASC Office in the Bank Building Room 204 by May 1, 1961.

Teacher awarded U S Scholarship for Summer Institute
Bonifacio D Fernandez a Taos High School teacher with an A B in Spanish and a Master's in School Administration has been selected for the Summer Institute for Secondary School Teachers of French and Spanish at the University of California Los Angeles from June 26 to August 11. The program under the National Defense Education Act funds 30 French and 30 Spanish teachers from public and private schools. weekly stipends are ineligible but dependents allowances may apply. Fernandez, veteran of World War II, will live in a dormitory and will not have his wife Marjorie Quintana and six children accompany him this summer while he continues teaching Spanish and Latin American history at the local high school.
