Benson, a senior at New Mexico University, has been awarded a graduate study fellowship by the University of Colorado Boulder. He expects to receive a bachelor’s degree this year and is one of four New Mexico students to receive Colorado study grants.
New Mexico State University extension specialist Joseph W. Slade says military use of wool for uniforms is increasing and may account for about 18 percent of U S wool production in the next three months. He notes drought reduced supply in Australia and stockpiles nearly exhausted, risking higher prices and possible shifts to blended or alternative fibers.
Taos County plans to use 60,000 in federal funds and 49,829 from local sources for operating expenses. The district anticipates 111 teachers with a new salary scale capped at 7 500 for advanced degrees plus hours. Superintendent Otero’s pay rises to 15,000 pending formal action. The budget covers administration, instruction, health, transport, plant services, maintenance, fixed charges, food service, and capital outlay with an emergency fund and construction funds noted.
Penasco school district would gain a larger tax base and direct state grant of 1.7 mills under the county school levy plan. The district plus Rio Arriba County portions may add about 14,647, with the state providing over half the total budget of 357,224 based on 965 weighted pupils. Duan’s salary rises to 11,000. budgets cover administration 24,190 instruction 351,854 health 6,433 transport 7,199 operations 30,422 maintenance 13,539 and other items. Federal funds under Economic Opportunity Act not included. state construction funds add 61,500. State sources total 494,302 plus 61,600.
Penasco The school board opened bids Friday night for lunchroom expansion at the elementary, a new high school library, and new science and math rooms at the junior high. The apparent low bid for the full project was Modern Construction Co Santa Fe at 72900.
The Santa Fe social security office will be open Saturday mornings through June to help people age 65 or older sign up for the Medicare portion of Social Security benefits. District manager Thomas L. Bernett says the extra hours accommodate workers with weekday jobs and allow younger relatives to assist seniors without taking time from work. Alma Georgia Kaufman age 75 of San Cristobal died at Holy Cross Hospital on April 6. Wanton Funeral Home shipped her body to Sherman Funeral Home in Oklahoma City for services and burial. Survivors include her husband Roy C Kaufman daughters Mrs. Lee Leepert and Mrs. Ray A Moses of Oklahoma City sister Mrs Clif B Sykes of Bluefield West Virginia and four grandchildren.
Reymundo Duran 21 of Penasco died in a car crash east of Dixon. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Wilkenson were held in Penasco on April 12 with burial in Penasco Cemetery. Pallbearers included Rafael Chavez Philip Quinte Leonard Torres Albert Vigil Esquipula Mascarenas and Robert Duran. Eulogist Fidel Vasquez. Survivors are his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo Duran, brothers Benito Vergilio Gilbert and Juan, sisters Mrs. Andy Chacan Mrs. Josie Hutcheson Mrs. Leonardo Torres and Misses Pauline and Rosaline Duran. He served two years in the US Air Force in Viet Nam ending March 3.
A Ranchos de Taos area man herding sheep near Garson about ten miles west of Taos was found dead after more than two months. Autopsy showed 17 stab wounds and a throat cut. The victim, in his early thirties and about 5 feet 10 inches tall, wore faced boots, Levi's, green brown plaid wool shirt, and a checked sport jacket. The body was burned April 12 at Sierra Vista Cemetery. Also mentioned is Max Morath's performance on the Bell Telephone Hour on April 24 at 4 30 p.m.
Taos County and Rio Arriba cross county tax figures yield $85,057 taxable at 5 mills with 8.5 percent collection. Questa district receives 22.48 percent of county funds totaling $21,955 plus motor vehicle and license fees. State support totals $604,443 including basic and minimum distributions and new funds for transportation, classroom experience, driver education, and construction. The district projects $671,000 in operating revenue plus $190,000 for building and $100,000 from recently approved bond sales.
