Taos Firefighters report the 1963 fire season is underway in northern New Mexico as an estimated 300 acre fire near Cleveland and Holman hurdles control. Four fire crews from Penasco Tortugas Taos Snowballs fought shifting winds, with Hawley warning fire danger rising toward high extreme unless rain arrives soon.

Church Meet Draws Crowd
Some 75 Presbyterian youths from across northern New Mexico are expected in Taos Saturday for a youth rally of the Santa Fe Presbytery. Host churches are First Presbyterian Taos and El Rancho Ranchos de Taos. Youths from Farmington Tucumcari will stay with Taos families Friday night. The rally ends about 3 36 p.m. with keynote talks by Rev Don Westfall. Taos area youth on the planning committee include Karen Benson and Carol Medina. Ranchos women will provide a noon meal at Ranchos.

Theldon Parrett Qualifies Expert With M-14 Rifle
Army Specialist Four Theldon S. Parrett, son of Mr and Mrs Scott Parrett of Taos, qualified as expert in firing the M-14 rifle in Germany. Parrett, 20, driver in the 6th Engineer Battalion Company D, entered the Army in February 1961 and has been stationed at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri after basic at Fort Hood Texas. He is a 1960 Taos High School graduate.
