Merchants fear loss of foot traffic if the Taos courthouse is moved, warning it could hurt local commerce and the town’s expansion. A committee member proposes using land behind the current courthouse, noting space for 209 parking spots with access from Bent Street to ease alley congestion.
The Taos Parent-Teachers Association meets at 7 40 p m today in Taos Elementary School’s all purpose room to elect new officers. The nominating committee plans Mrs Bill Stevens for president and several others for vice presidents secretary and treasurer. Floor nominations are allowed and programs by Mrs Orlando Ortiz plus the old building use after the high school relocation are on the agenda.
Marcelino Martinez favors building the courthouse on the plaza with possible use of seven offices in the old bank and six above the theater free during construction. Jacob Bernal notes all property options must be considered as several residents urge moving the courthouse from the plaza.
At a council meeting the Taos panel discussed drain line reconstruction to prevent well contamination and heard health officials including Aubrey Willard and William Cortez. The sales tax ordinance was rewritten and will take effect July 1 after Sanchez led a protest over the legality of the original measure. Reporters from Albuquerque and Santa Fe attended the April 5 conference.
State Sen C B Trujillo of Taos and Mora was appointed to the seven member Legislative Finance Committee becoming the first freshman named to the panel. He joins Sen Alex Martinez and others as one of the first Spanish Americans on the committee. Trujillo helped draft the Appropriations Bill and served as liaison to the House during negotiations. He closed his first session with Senate Bill 222 passing, a measure he introduced to address land title clearance in New Mexico.

Lourdes E. Montoya aged 29 of Taos died Wednesday April 5 at Holy Cross Hospital. She is survived by her parents Isi dro Montoya of Taos and three sisters Nancy Romero Loyola Montoya both of Taos and Dora Roybat of Oakland California.
