Water Rights Settlement Timeline in Taos Rio Pueblos

The state filed federal lawsuits in 1969 seeking water rights adjudication for Rio Pueblo de Taos and Rio Hondo. Suits were consolidated. In 1970 a district court deferred Pueblo lands adjudication, while non Pueblo lands moved forward. Taos Valley Acequia Association approached the Pueblo in 1989 to seek negotiated settlement. Principles for Settlement approved in March 2004 laid out the settlement structure. In March 2006 the parties concluded tales and finalized a draft, with the agreement released publicly March 31, 2006. Local parties planned to resolve federal issues and push legislation in Congress and the New Mexico Legislature after June 2006.
