Annual Grade School Cage Tourney To Begin Friday

Taos County grade school basketball tournament opens at 9 am Friday at Central Catholic gym with schools including Costilla Amana Cerra Arroyo Hondo Arroyo Seco Llano Talpa Tres Piedras. Midget and Junior divisions feature seeded teams led by Ranchos Arroyo Hondo Arroyo Seca Talpa. Defending champions Arroyo Hondo. Admission 26 tents for kids 60 cents adults. Saturday 50 cents students 1 dollar adults.

Stove Fire Damages Home in Des Montes

A coal stove overheated in a Des Montes home owned by Orlando Martinez caused a fire just before noon last Thursday. The blaze damaged the building about 200 dollars and contents around 50 dollars. Taos Volunteer Fire Department responded. firefighters wore air masks until the smoke cleared. Chief Gary Stribling praised a woman who reported the fire and guided emergency crews to the scene.

Wool Payments In Mail Shortly Taos County Farmers To Receive Incentives

Taos County farmers eligible for wool incentive payments will receive about 27.8 percent of net sales with rates for unshorn lambs at 54 cents per 100 pounds live weight. Mohair payments remain unchanged. Office manager Guadalupe Cardenas says checks will go out around April 15.

Taos Private Santana Romero in Mock Battle

Taos private Santana Romero of the 1st Infantry Division joined a two week counter insurgency field training exercise near Fort Leonard Wood Missouri ending March 30. Romero assigned to Company B 1st Battalion 18th Infantry took part in counter guerrilla warfare simulating forces of Woodland the insurgent nation. Romero a Fort Riley Kansas based soldier entered service last November after basic at Fort Polk Louisiana and is a 1960 graduate of the U S Indian School Albuquerque.

Northeastern Firemen Meet Here Sunday

Members of the Tasd Volunteer Fire Department will cast representatives from fire departments across Northeastern New Mexico on Sunday, April 5. About 60 firemen from 40 communities are expected. The program begins at 1:30 pm with a session on extinguisher use led by Herman Knight, followed by a roundtable on rural fire department problems moderated by Clark Funk. The day ends with a buffet dinner at the fire station.

Arroyo Seco Man in Critical Condition After Self-Inflicted Shooting

Moises Herrera Jr., 22, of Arroyo Secos, was reported improved but in critical condition at Holy Cross Hospital after a Tuesday noon gunshot to the chest. Sheriff Uvaldo Sandoval said the wound stemmed from a personal safety matter related to a broken romance.

Animal Kingdom seeks home for three year old Australian sheep dog

The Animal Shelter offers a fine tri colored Australian Sheep dog, three years old, spayed, suited as a house or working sheep dog. The dog is lonely after her family moved, with boarding facilities available at the shelter. Santa Fe Preparatory announces 7th and 8th–10th grade tests

Francis C. Sloorgood, head master, says admissions testing for 7th grade on Saturday, April 18 and for grades 8 9 and 10 on Saturday, April 25. The school enters its first year of operation and plans to add a grade each year to 12th. Judge Oliver Seth serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Mora Youth Improves After Mora Car Crash

Leroy Joe Torres, 16, son of Mr and Mrs Rosenda Torres of Mora, injured Thursday evening in a one car crash on State Road 3 at Talpa, was reported improving at Holy Cross Hospital. He was driving at high speed, missed a curve, skidded 189 feet, struck a fat rail, rolled over, and hit a stop sign. he was pinned under the car and underwent surgery for head and chest injuries. His brother Joe, 19, a passenger, was uninjured.
