Taos Pueblo Petition Seeks Electricity Amid Council Inaction
Three Indian families from the Taos Pueblo reservation filed a petition in New Mexico’s congressional delegation seeking electric power for homes outside the village but on reservation land. The Taos Pueblo Council has reportedly refused to authorize electricity for residents, with scarce exceptions. The petition notes the Day School and clinic nearby are served by Kit Carson Electrical Co-op via United Pueblo Agency and U.S. Public Health Service, while the Co-op awaits right-of-way approval. A few houses near the school have been allowed to hook up, but many others have been denied. Some homes rely on portable generators, which are costly to run, as petitioners cite better living conditions and eased domestic labor as reasons. Bill Seeks Wild River Status For Rio Grande
The Rio Grande is among six waterways pushed for immediate wild river status in a bill drafted for Congress by Interior Secretary Stewart L. Udall. The proposal would create a National Wild Rivers System to preserve scenic and outdoor recreation values along the Rio Grande section from the Colorado line to Pilar in Taos County, plus four miles of the Red River. The measure follows Outdoor Resources Review Commission recommendations and stems from a year and a half study by Interior Agriculture teams defining wild rivers as streams to be kept in free-flowing condition.

Eagle Nest Man Claims Innocence in Santa Fe Case
Alfred Trujillo a 58 year old Eagle Nest logger free on 1590 bond pleaded innocent to aggravated assault in Santa Fe claiming self defense in the healing of Jose Lopez Romeo. Santa Fe attorney Albert Gonzales represents him and the district attorney's office notes the proposal to take a lie detector exam but a decision on administering the test has not been made.

Adults and Juvenile Arrested in Arroyo Seco
State Police officer Willie Garcia and Taos County Sheriff Uvaldo Sandoval arrested three adults and a juvenile after they were found intoxicated in an abandoned Arroyo Seco house. Pacheco and Martinez, both 19, faced drunkenness and resisting arrest charges. Pacheco fined $100 plus costs, Martinez released on bond. Espinoza, 17, and Cardova, 18, were each fined $25 for drunkenness.

Police Recover Stolen Bicycle In Taos Canyon Chase
Police Louis Duran and Felix Martinez recovered a bicycle stolen from Mrs. Jim Hanlon within 30 minutes after a pickup fled toward Taos Canyon. Four juveniles were taken into custody and turned over to probation officer Mary Martinez. The bike was for Jimmy Lee to enter the Taos News Bicycle Safety Contest.
