Mrs Celeste H Porter born October 9 1902 died in a Wilmington hospital after a long illness. Funeral service held at Jessup chapel with Rev Winfrey Davis and Rev J F Coble officiating. Burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Survived by husband A E Porter daughter Virginia Porter and two brothers Robert Howard and Jessie Howard.
R. T. Bruton Dewey Cox and F. W Powler have served in Whiteville all week on the superior court jury. Several important cases were set to come up during the current term.

J. M. Houg, superintendent of education in Columbus County, announced this week that three new teachers have been assigned to the county. Frank McGougan postmaster announced a third rural route from Tabor City starting October 1. Route 3 will serve Olyphic and Nakina areas with daily mail by 2:30 pm, replacing the Nakina star route. R. D. Fipps will oversee Route 3, altering mileage on Routes 1 and 2. A petition led to Route 3 approval last winter.
Mrs Burt Mitchell formerly Mary Elizabeth Baldwin sustained a broken wrist in an automobile collision 18 miles from Rocky Mount last Thursday midnight. Major Mitchell had minor bruises and lacerations as their 1942 Dodge was demolished after a car with several colored occupants skidded into it. They were hospitalized in Rocky Mount and Mrs Baldwin aided their onward trip. Major Mitchell serves at Army Headquarters in Baltimore Maryland.

Larry McNeil shot Robert Denkins in the colored section of Tabor Schild's Department Store on Sunday. Denkins, described as negro, was severely wounded and in critical condition at Columbus New Year county hospital. McNeil posted bond of 500 dollars. charges were not learned as of press time. Wright Sarvis of Tabor City suffered a stroke in front of D C Spivey's service station Monday afternoon.
The Loris American Legion post reports $3,628.79 raised of a $25,000 goal for a new Legion Home to serve as recreation and meeting space. The effort, led by Ernest ZL Graham, aims to involve all locals, especially youth, with a fundraising booth reopening Saturday staffed by Legion Auxiliary and Legionnaires.
An anniversary meeting was held last Saturday afternoon at Sandy Plain Baptist church with six schools present and a large countryside crowd. A family dinner on the ground followed. meetings have been annual for years. The minutes from last year were read and next year’s dinner is planned at Oak Dales. Rev. Dagger Stephens gave the feature address as songs from an outstanding quartet were heard. Attending communities included Sandy Plain Iron Hill Oak Dale Mt Sinia Clarendon and Sweet Home. Each school sang three songs and most delivered a speech.
J L Baxter joined fellow members of the North Carolina Lumber Manufacturing Association in Raleigh last Tuesday. The meeting discussed timber shortages and current OPA price ceilings affecting the industry. Through the day he traveled with association colleagues from across the state. The same week the Tabor City Veterans of Foreign Wars post planned a Riverview Hotel gathering at Little River, S.C. tonight with supper and a 8 o clock cutoff for members and prospective recruits.
Dudley Prince Dudley, 21, of Fair Bluff, held in Pender County jail on bonds totaling 2,000 dollars after being charged with a second automobile theft on September 17 in Whiteville and a prior theft on September 3. U S Commissioner J Douglas Taylor, Deputy Walter Hatch and an FBI agent noted the two wrongs do not make a right. Trial set for October term of U S District Court Wilmington.
Three area youths enlisted in the regular Army Monday afternoon as Captain N. G. Cottle and a recruiting sergeant visited Tabor City. Malcolm Wright 17, Stanley Hooks 18, and Daniel Blackmon 17 joined from Whiteville and Tabor City. They plan to complete high school while serving and use the G I Bill benefits.
Chief Frank Young of the Tabor City Fire Department received a letter from William Hodges Raleigh Insurance Commissioner urging heightened fire prevention during the week of October 6 through 12. Hodges warned of acute fire conditions and the impact on housing churches hospitals and other services if a fire occurs.
LeRoy Gore says Gore Lake will be rebuilt after its destruction last month with ordered materials for a concrete spillway and a dam lowered by about two feet. He expects work to start within three months as state engineers plan to blast deep holes in the dry lake bed to aid fish if the dam is destroyed again.
The Columbus county finance committee raised 600 dollars in one hour last Monday afternoon toward the area quota of 3150 dollars. Led by Shay Smith and aided by Ed Fonvielle Ernest Sanders Paul Rogers Joe Simon and Scott Parham the group canvassed local businesses and finished with the goal reached. County finance chairman S L Braxton said progress was strong and that the drive would meet the October 1 deadline to fund training for white and colored scouts alike.
The Civitan club held its semi monthly gathering at East Tabor Cafe with nearly all members present for a fish supper. Dr S J Potts Ed Prince and S T Rogers prepared the meal. Dr Ross Williamson was named Civitan representative to the War Memorial Committee. A sizable amount was raised for the Salvation Army drive. Mr and Mrs Tom Angle and family visited Raleigh with local hosts over the weekend.
The Tabor City tobacco market closed the 1946 season after 35 selling days with 10,493,462 pounds sold for 5,580,325.83 dollars at an average of 53.18 per hundred. Willard G. Cole praised growers and noted the season ranked among belt highs, with significant gains over last year and a growing auction market.
R. L. Watts was arrested twice in the past week on public drunkenness charges. Four others named were Robert Faulk, Herman Grice, Hobart Ward, and Doris Waddell, all charged with public drunkenness.
The Carolina Sweet Potato Council convened its fourth meeting at the YMCA in Florence DC with B Alton Garrell presiding.
