The Board of Commissioners drew three sets of Superior Court jurors and one Recorder's Court panel for a September term. First week jurors include J Robert Davis and many others from Whiteville Chadbourn and surrounding towns. second and third weeks add numerous residents from Tabor City Fair Bluff Nakina and Cerro Gordo.

Commercial booths will host firms from New York to Florida and the state college extension will add twenty one booths on sweet potatoes. Chief L R sracson says the U S Secret Service warned merchants and citizens this week to guard against counterfeit ten and twenty dollar federal reserve notes in circulation nationwide. The advisory details bank identifiers and plate numbers to spot fakes and notes possible aging or fiber-scan features.
The Lowrimore family in Pireway are informed Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore set Nov 30 for Joney Day Lowrimore to be examined before possible surgery. Funds for the exam and operation were raised by Rev Henry A. Bizzell and Columbus County citizens.
Police radios routed calls from Legion Field Whiteville as a collapsed dugout injured several. A State Highway Patrol car relayed word from Elizabethtown to the County Station while Whiteville ambulance teams prepared. Chief Watson and Officer Whitten then moved three injured to hospital proving radio value.
Miiss Gayle Wells an assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Columbus County spoke to the Tabor City Woman's Club on The Importance In Health and Community Service. She warned that lack of soap and water and malnutrition drive skin disease and illness among children and urged better eating and sanitation.
The Veterans Administration announced a dividend formula for National Service Life Insurance policies covering about 16 million WWII veterans. Younger vets get 55 cents per month per $1,000. older policyholders have a sliding scale from 52 to 20 cents. The top checks go to under-40 holders with $10,000 policies in force through 1948 anniversaries. Dividends total $2.8 billion to be paid in early 1950, with all policies through 1948 anniversaries included. Applications are available at post offices and veterans centers. many have already been sent in. The plan excludes permanent plans surrendered for reduced paid-up amounts.
Officers of Mount Tabor Baptist Church were elected Sunday by the nominating committee and adopted by the church. The 189 officers and teachers will begin duties October 2 under Rev. F C Gantt with positions across General Church, Baptist Training Union, and Sunday School, including Rogers as Clerk and Kelley as Treasurer.
Rev. H Free Surratt will lead St. Paul Methodist Church members to a Raleigh Advance mass meeting at Edenton Street Church on Oct 3 1949. The event is part of 78 nationwide gatherings Sept 29 to Nov 2 under Methodism's Advance for Christ and His Church with The Faith theme and talks by bishops and lay leaders.
Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Belvin Morris Sr. of Whiteville died Friday morning at Dr. Sidburry Hospital Wrightsville Sound. Funeral rites were at New Hope Baptist Church Saturday at 4 pm with Rev. J F Gaddy officiating. Interment in church cemetery. Survived by sister Wanda Sharon Morris brother Jerry Wayne Morris maternal grandmother Mrs D F McQueen paternal grandmother Mrs Ozzie Morris.
Emma Ward, died in Columbus County Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were at Palmyra Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Carter officiating. Burial followed at Formy DuVal Cemetery. Survived by daughters Frances Blackmon and Emma Blackmon, sons Fletcher Ward and J G Ward, brothers Hampie Powell and Amos Powell.
The second annual Caro Linas Yam Festival in Tabor City sets $400 in cash prizes for adult youth men and women. Entries require two bushels of sweet potatoes and judging covers pies pones croquettes breads puddings custards and more with multiple prize levels. Winners announced Thursday afternoon October 13 after 10 30 a m Exhibit Hall entry deadline.
Raleigh. Col. C. R. Tolar, highway patrol commander, announced a two day state road block plan to inspect vehicles for defective lights. Drivers with faulty lighting must repair lights, or tow to a repair shop, and may receive equipment cards valid for 48 hours. Similar checks planned on subsequent midweek nights.
Checks are being prepared for the regular quarterly dividend of 50 cents per share to stockholders of the Waccamaw Bank and Trust Company. The dividend totals $10,000 and is payable on or before September 24 to stockholders of record as of September 15, 1949, with about 200 holders across the bank's service territory.

Stevens son of Mr and Mrs D A Stevens of Tabor City N C has been assigned to Craig Air Force Base Alabama He attended Tabor City High School before enlisting in December 1948 and completing basic training at Lackland AFB Texas prior to attending the Clerk Typist School at Fort Francis E Warren Wyoming before joining Craig Air Force Base.
