Brothers Die In Separate Pulpit and Road Incidents
In Conway area, Rev. John Henry Altman and his brother J. J. Altman died minutes apart from heart attacks. John Henry collapsed in Valley Forge Baptist Church pulpit near Bayboro at about 10 AM during preparation to preach. J. J. Altman, unaware of his brother’s death, suffered a fatal heart attack while traveling by automobile toward Conway around 4:30 PM. Funeral services will be at Eaddy Ford cemetery near Johnsonville. John Henry Altman, 62, was a Baptist preacher and farmer who had lived in Florence County before moving near Conway in 1936. He is survived by his widow Etta Nettles Altman, eight sons, four daughters, and numerous grandchildren. J. J. Altman, 55, a Vox-area farmer, is survived by his widow and five sons, three daughters, two sisters, and five grandchildren. Both families listed nearby communities and connections to Ridgefield and Valley Forge churches.

Police Chief L R Watson with Officer Ted Watts and Deputies A H McCumbee and B B Courtney destroyed a whiskey still about two and a half miles from Tabor City on the Fair Bluff Road. The one hundred gallon copper rig held four hundred fifty gallons of mash, possibly in operation as late as Friday night before the Sunday raid. Operators were unknown and no arrests were made. Mr and Mrs Dale Graham and family of Raleigh were visitors in town during the weekend.

Memorial Rites Dedicate Mount Olive Nursery
Memorial rites at Mount Olive Baptist Church honor Gary Blanton who died in World War II. H Cliff Spivey near Tabor City credits tile drainage for harvesting 1500 pounds of quality tobacco per acre this season. He consulted the Soil Conservation Service in Whiteville and followed a conservation plan, draining poor to good land and improving pastures and erosion control. Publisher First Tabor Newspaper Dies In Hospital
Double funeral rites were held Sunday at Chadbourn Methodist Church for Mr. and Mrs. William Garrett Perkins of Chadbourn who died within 27 hours of each other. Mr. Perkins died at Bullock Hospital Willington at 11:50 p.m. Thursday after an extended illness. Mrs. Perkins, an invalid for four years, died Saturday at 2:13 a.m. after cerebral hemorrhage triggered by her husband's death. They moved to Columbus County in 1928 and built the Columbus County News and later the Tabor City Times. Surviving children are two daughters Lemoitte of Marion SC and Hal Ramey of Chadbourn, five grandchildren, and a brother J W Wiggins of Charlotte. Interment was in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.
