TeRoy Gore, son of Lee Gore, says the Gore Lake dam will be rebuilt this winter and will back water about ten feet, open water to clear trees. Evelyn Missouri Porter 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Porter of Route 2 Loris, died suddenly at home Thursday at 2:30 AM after attending a show with her parents the night before. She leaves her parents, five sisters Erline Essie Doris Mavis Ina Pearl, five brothers Benny J Norman Leo and Jana Autry. Funeral arrangements are handled by Jessup Inman Funeral Home in Tabor City and were incomplete at press time.
Buyers and warehouse staff from the local tobacco market were entertained Tuesday night at East Tabor Cafe by Carolina Warehouse proprietors James W. Peay and George Walden. The gathering served as an entertainment event to allow participants to mingle beyond business.
The men and ladies' class of the Methodist church enjoyed a fish and shrimp supper at the Bertie Harrelson place near Cherry Grove on Wednesday night September 4. About 30 persons attended.
The secretary Mrs. Frank Young announces a special call meeting of Tabor City Order of the Eastern Star chapter 240 for Monday evening September 16 at 8 o'clock. The lodge hall is the American Legion hut venue.
The Tabor City tobacco market set an all time dollar record this week with over five million dollars paid to growers. Through yesterday sales had already surpassed a half million beyond last season's total, and warehousemen aim for eleven million pounds as the market nears a closing date.
Tabor City tobacco market will stay open an extra week through September 27 to handle remaining local farmers’ tobaccos. R C Coleman president of the tobacco board said closing on September 20 would leave much unsold. A plan includes Her bert Brown of Damascus Va as auctioneer and a full slate of buyers for the extended session. Daily averages favored the Tabor City market amid fluctuating prices.
E. W. Fonvielle, chairman of the hotel committee formed by the merchants association in Tabor City, said there are no new developments on a first rate hotel project. He noted members are busy and proposed postponing another meeting until tobacco season ends, when the group would reconvene to plan a coordinated push for construction.
Ta ser City schools report inability to supply all elementary text books due to strikes and paper shortages. Superintendent C. H. Penner notes state provision covers only free texts for grades one through eight and urges patience until county offices restock selections and supplementary readers.
Twelve new lunch room tables and a 35 foot refrigerator expand facilities at Tabor City school. A passlove is expected soon while the federal aid plan will provide 15 cent meals and 18 bottles of milk daily. Superintendent Penner notes delays in equipment release but expects better service once installed. Parents urged to ensure breakfast as midmorning snacks may be unavailable for a period.
The American Legion will hold its regular monthly meeting tonight at the hut at 7 45 oclock. All old and new members are urged to attend. About 50 of last year’s 200 members have signed up for the coming year to date and those who have not joined for 1947 are asked to be present to boost local membership to last year’s level.
The Tabor City unit earned two state and one national citations for meritorious service in advancing the national program. The national citation commends expanding membership and aiding veterans. Local leader Mrs. J Percy Brown invites eligible young women with relatives in the area to join and support veterans’ hospital work.
The Tabor City Cold Storage plant nears completion though freezing equipment from outside is not yet ready delaying opening. W. H. Dyson and H. C. Causey own it, R. G. Ayers runs it, with 444 lockers installed and many rented. Ayers, an Army veteran, will manage and move to Tabor City.
A packed house at the Tabor City Negro schol parent teachers association meeting in the school house at eight o'clock. The first session of the term opened with singing and a prayer by Prof. J. D. Pridgen. W Horace Carter spoke briefly on colored people in the world today. President Dee Graham presided over other business.
Columbus and Brunswick county leaders met with Col George Gillette in Wilmington to discuss drainage of water logged swamp land. A canal from Mullet Creek to the Waccamaw river would drain thousands of acres for farming and forestry, affecting the Tabor City area across five counties.
