William Nobles 36 and his son Paul 8 drowned while wading near a fishing party at Lake Waccamaw. Mary Nobles 10 rescued. Coroner H Nance notes unmarked holes in lake bottom. Rev W M Pope officiated funeral at China Grove Baptist Church for the pair.
Citizens in Columbus County approve banning legal beer and wine sales by a three to one margin. If unchanged, sale of these beverages ends October 28. only Whiteville and two precincts voted for continuation. The Allied Church League and Citizens Committee led mass meetings and full page ads amid a county wide campaign.
Tabor City schools added two teachers in the past week and still seek two sixth grade posts for the coming year. Principal C H Pinner said prospects exist and hoped to fill them before school opens. The music teacher position, once unfilled, was dropped to meet the teacher quota.

Pvt Dale Watts arrives in Sendai Japan with the Eighth Army for occupation duty as a rifleman in F Company 188th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He is the son of Mrs Edith Watts of Tabor City and joined the Army in Whiteville in 1948 after graduating from Tabor City High School.
Charlie M. Blackwell aged 56 died at his Cedar Creek home after a brief illness from a heart attack. Funeral services were held at his home with Rev. Simmons officiating and burial in the family cemetery. Survived by six sons Ralph Tom Brice Burris Owen and Herbert Blackwell of Cerro Gordo, sisters Mrs S L Turner of Newport News Virginia Essie Blackwell at home and Mrs Clyde Simmons of Clarendon.
A revival begins Monday night September 13 at Mission Valley Free Will Baptist Church near Mollie. Rev. L. M Ward reports Rev. A. L. In Davis housing area known as Castle Quarters a dispute over a half pint of whiskey ended with Davis fatally wounded by a shotgun blast. Poe admitted firing after a struggle lasting minutes as a knife and gun were drawn during the confrontation. Police identified the deceased as a 30-year-old man and Poe as the shooter, with an unidentified third party present.

The partnership of Billy Whit ted and Lawrence J Campbell Jr formed the Tribune’s past year has dissolved. Whit ted became sole publisher last week and will run the paper with no policy change. Campbell has not announced future plans. The domestic demand for poultry and eyes is likely to continue very strong.
