Tabor City Youth Calvin Bennett Listed Killed in Korea
Pvt Calvin Bennett of Tabor City died in Korea on July 12 after being listed as missing in action. He enlisted in fall 1949 and is survived by parents Mr and Mrs C C Bennett of Wilmingon, four sisters, and a brother at Fort Jackson. The same week the Tabor City Marketing Association set a new all time seasonal record for sweet potato auctioning with sales near 455 000 bushels by Friday and expected to top 500 000, as prices averaged 1.56 per bushel.

Deland Leonard Victim Of Hit And Run On Fair Bluff Hwy
Deland Leonard sustained a broken arm and leg in a hit and run on the Fair Bluff highway west of Tabor City Thursday night at 9 30. He is treated at the Veterans Administration hospital in Fayetteville. A speeding car cut from the right to the left striking him as he tried to move away. Patrolman W S Allen investigates with no definite clues yet to identify the driver.

Bursey Gets Eight to Ten Years in State Prison
Lawrence Bursey and his brother in law T. Nealey from Tabor City faced Superior Court after burglaries at the Carolina Dept. Store and other break ins. Bursey received eight to ten years in the State Prison. Nealey was not tried this term and remains on bond. Fred Cribb of Clarendon was sentenced to 15 to 20 years for involuntary manslaughter in the August vehicle death of 11 year old Sonja Skipper near Tabor City.

Walter Emmons of Chadbourn, previously banished after a string of liquor cases, is jailed awaiting Recorder's Court in Whiteville for possession for sale after deputies found eight cans of beer and two half pints of bonded whiskey. He could face two more years on the roads plus further penalties.
