The Loris Furniture Factory burned briefly after three o clock Tuesday morning causing minor damage. Fire departments from Loris and Tabor City responded, with the blaze under control and a roof hole noted on the south side. Water damage affected some lumber as the new plant had just begun production.
The first meeting of the 1946 1947 Parent Teachers Association will be held in the school auditorium on Tuesday at 7 30 PM. New officers will be elected and a discussion will cover the proposed school expansion plan in Columbus county and Tabor City. Principal H Pinner urged all patrons to attend. Mrs Louise K Anderson visits Mr and Mrs Harry Anderson in Hemingway S C.
In a tense season opener at Hallboro the lig School Eleven battled Tabor eleven to a 6-6 draw. Soles connected with Fipps for a 40 yard gain, then scored on a rushing play. Creech and Pate combined to answer, but extra point failed. A late 40 yard TD by Jernigan was negated by huddle-time ruling.
The Tabor City football team defeated Wallace 6-0 on Thursday afternoon. Fred Soles threw 20 yards to Ted Fipps for the touchdown in the second quarter. The last home game of the season will be next Friday afternoon when Chadbourn visits.
At a called Civitan meeting Willie Maurer announced the anniversary banquet will be held November 18 at eight o clock at the Comet club at Lake Waccamaw. Chadbourn Civitan club and Civinettes will attend as guests. District Governor Dr. J W Branham of Raleigh invited to speak. Dr. Rossie M Williamson and Otis Garrell named to raise an automobile as a prize for Atholotic Association funds.
James W. Buck Peay donated a loud speaking system to Tabor City school. Principal C H Pinner announced the gift noting the system was long needed and will be used in the auditorium and gym for programs and athletic announcements.
Florine Thompson, a 44 year old colored woman, will care for the public rest room in the Atlantic Coast Line building. The rest rooms are now open, announced Willard G. Cole, executive secretary of the local merchants association. Mrs. W. D. Williams is much improved after several days illness.
Dr. Resse M Williamson, a Tabor City physician, is named to represent his region on the North Carolina Good Health Association council with offices in Durham. The nomination commits support for the Hill Burton program and state matching funds to expand hospital beds health centers tuberculosis facilities and a teaching hospital and medical school expansion at Chapel Hill.
Mrs E L Graham passed away Wednesday night at the family home in Loris. Found by husband Ernest L Graham, the local tailor. Doctors cited heart attack. funeral set for Friday at 11 at First Baptist Church Loris. Survived by husband, daughter Betty Jo Medlin of route 2 Loris, and son Ernest L Graham Jr of Columbia S C.
The Pioneer Study club met Thursday at Mrs. W. A. Williams home with Mrs. Williams presiding. Isses Leona Cox Martha Harrelson and Frances Small spoke on Is American Literature Being Read Abroad. Harold Rogers Ernest Steadman Cox Fred Jernigan Keith Spivey and Ralph Baxter presented a radio program The warning of the Book. Members present included several named ladies and Miss Edith Stafford. A social salad course and coffee followed.
The locally shot film by Park Picture Productions will premiere at the Ritz Theatre Friday night, November 8, with town officials, local businesses, and town industry featured. It will be shown again Thursday night, November 14.
The Eastern Star will sponsor a Thanksgiving program at the American Legion hut on Tuesday evening November 26 at 7 80. The event features the baby contest for children six months to five years with entry through Mae Young Bertha Wright Jay Soles or Anna Belle Angle. Votes cost one cent and the contest runs until the program night. Also on the program is a cake walk chaired by R T Bruton and a Thanksgiving program by Gladys Derrick for parents.
Mrs. Frank Young has taken over the oral hygiene program in local schools. The seventh time the program appeared in Henderson, with J. L. Lewis attending the Northern District Conference. Fred Jernigan brought an egg from his midget poultry yard, a six and a half pound hen laid the egg and he wonders if it contains a yolk.
Granite curbing has arrived and corkmen began laying it along Railroad street under Engineer R E Reynolds. Sidewalks will be raised and widened to join the curbing. the state highway department expects future widening to form a full pavement from rail line to curb on both sides. This marks the first visible progress in the town’s public utility expansion program.
Mrs Frank Young chair man of the Junior Red Cross drive reports 44 schools are preparing packages of soap washcloths handkerchiefs marbles and school supplies to aid war torn families overseas. A letter from Kaya Urmas a 15 year old student in Salo Finland thanks the drive and notes learning English as she awaits future correspondence.
The Hallowe'en Carnival at the school gym, sponsored by the Tabor City Woman's club, drew strong attendance and orderly participation. Prizes included Gravel Gertie, B O Plenty, King and Queen for top proceeds, corn and bean guessing, cake chances, and a gypsy fortune teller. Proceeds support the club building fund for a library, kindergarten, and cubs recreation. The event featured booths, games, cake walks, and a drum performance by Thomas Garrell with master of ceremonies Principal C H Pinner. A fire zone expansion and permit system for repairs and new buildings were approved by the Tabor City Board, outlining inspection steps and fee distribution.
Whiteville, Loris, Fair Bluff, and Tabor City representatives met to set a four town area policy for holidays and half holidays. The group proposed closing Wednesday afternoons from January 1 to July 15 and opening July 15 to the tobacco market closure in the four towns, with December fully open. Full holidays to include July 4 Armistice Day Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The Tabor City Rotary Club held its regular weekly meeting at the Modern cafe Monday evening. President J. L. Baxter presided over a brief business session as Raymond B. Mallard gave the feature talk.
Mrs Otto Wright had surgery at the Mayo Clinic Rochester Minnesota on Monday November 4 her condition is reported good Morrison Wright her son stationed with the army in Oklahoma City arrived shortly after the operation and is with her now
