The UJA campaign lags as donations arrive slowly through Joe Simon and local supporters. Community members are urged to donate by mail or personal solicitation to aid food, clothing, and shelter for people in need around the world and at home.
A revival service is at Mount Tabor this week with services starting at 10:00 a.m. The event highlights attendance marking by local leaders and church officials.
The Iron Hill Baptist Church, one of the oldest structures, burned to the ground Friday morning between 6 and 7 o clock from unknown causes. Willie Hewett discovered the blaze, but it was beyond control. No fire department was summoned as services had not been held since Sunday. Lumber on the site for a new church remained undamaged. The congregation voted to begin construction soon. The S W Garrells of Tabor City donated one acre of land at Oak Grove for the new building. Rev S A Hatley, pastor, led an open air service on Sunday and plans call for services in a pack barn on the D H Jordan farm until the new church is ready. The barn, 24 by 40 feet, is expected to accommodate ongoing services.
The Williams township school was gifted a 1950 Chevrolet by Prince Motor Company of Tabor City to serve as a driving training car for students. Principal R L Randall received the vehicle from A E Goldfinch, with Mrs. Randall instructing the class. The car features dual controls, allowing the instructor to operate brakes and clutch while students learn.
Total sales on the Tabor City sweet potato market through last Saturday reached 136 753 bushels sold for 195 078 06 dollars with an average price of 1 43 per bushel. Authorities note large potato storage may affect future sales and price optimism remains uncertain.
The Pac Taker City Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star will hold a regular meeting in Ye Blasouic Hall Monday evening with initiation ceremonies. All members are urged to attend.
Five residents canvass for Annual Community Concert Associations as a drive runs this week. Membership costs 6 dollars for the full series to 3 dollars for a single event. The effort is led by Brooks McGougan and other local volunteers. About 70 locals joined last year and many memberships were sold countywide. A kickoff with Whiteville groups was held Monday evening.
North Carolina official H P Cotton urged a large Legion Hut gathering that now is the best moment to start industrial development. Local leaders, led by four experts from railroads and utilities, discussed decentralizing industry amid defense needs and labor concerns, urging community cooperation to attract firms.
Ku Klux Klan circulated red leaflets announcing a public Klan demonstration and cross burning set for November 11 in Horry county between Mullins and Loris. The message invites public attendance and cites speakers from Florida and South Carolina. Police and local revival services are mentioned nearby.
Citizens of Tabor City urged to push for paving and maintenance on the Old Stake road from Emerson to Grist. The route serves a farm area, multiple churches, three mail routes, and a school bus line, with heavy seasonal use and ongoing demand for better rural transportation. Governor Scott’s rural road efforts are acknowledged, but the Old Stake road tops the list for further work.
A 33 year old World War II veteran, Airy Cartrette of Sandy Plains, drowned at Hog Island Inlet near Cherry Grove Beach, South Carolina, after stepping into a hole and being swept by undertow. Wade Soles aided him. resuscitation failed. Funeral held with full military honors by American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He leaves a wife, three children, three brothers, and two sisters.
The Woman's Auxiliary of the Tabor City Presbyterian church will meet with Mrs. Roland Baldwin at her home on Tuesday evening, November 7, at 7 30.
Cpl. Dale Watts son of Mr and Mrs Dow Watts of Tab or City serves with the 187th Regimental Combat Team in Korea. He is a transportation corporal in the mortar platoon of the support company and has served with the 187 Airborne Infantry since February 1949 at Fort Campbell. From September 24 to 30 1950 he saw action on the Kimpo Peninsula northwest of Seoul and is entitled to the Combat Infantry badge Parachutist badge Occupation of Japan medal and Victory medal.
ONeal Hyatt, son of Mr and Mrs Murry Hyatt of Tabor City NC, was promoted to Corporal while with the Medical Company of the 20th Infantry Regiment. He enlisted in the Army at Jacksonville July 1948 and served at Fort Lewis prior to overseas duty with his unit.
North and South Carolina agriculture reports show Tabor City’s 1950 season average at 55.37 per hundred pounds on 7.8311 thousand pounds sold. Fayetteville led the belt at 57.00, with others like Lumberton, Fair Bluff, and Fairmont close behind. belt average set a new high, surpassing last year by 6.36. Tabor City has topped the belt in four of the past seven years but not in 1960.
