Station commander Sgt Emery G Murray announces that GI Bill benefits did not terminate in October 1946 and that anyone enlisting after that date and serving 90 days is entitled to schooling credits. He notes extended privileges under the amended Servicemen's Readjustment Act and expects continued high enlistment in eastern North Carolina.
Lee Gore arrived with Mrs. Gore after a month in California. He said they traveled the Northern route there and the Southern route back and still did not see enough rain.
The Veteran of Foreign Wars backs a clean midway and carnival that will run all next week with Rudolph Todd as post commander. Based in Charlotte, the show travels to Carolina towns and adds new attractions this time. Highlight acts are Buddy Melvin performing at 84 feet and Sport Matthews on a 126 foot high swaying pole with no nets. Profits fund the VFW building program.
The registration books for the State and County election closed Saturday after three Saturdays for new registrants. Only seven citizens registered since the primary, but those on the prior list remain eligible. About 1200 are registered with Mrs. Leona Brown in charge. The general election is on November 5.
Ralph Inman ex chief pharmacist mate and Harry Stephens ex painter second class aboard the USS Bunker Hill earned Presidential Unit Citations for extraordinary heroism in the Pacific War Area from November 11, 1943, to May 11, 1945. They served in battles at Rabaul Gilberts Nauru and other major operations including Truk the Marianas Palau and the Philippines. Inman formerly led the local American Legion post.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service met at the parsonage with Mrs J F Coble for the third India study session. Miss Mary Jo Cole led Health of India, Winstead spoke on Youth Work in India, and Cox discussed Rural India and Industrial Work. Members present included Letha Butler and others.
Funeral rites for Mrs. Roxie Ann Wright 60 of Tabor City were held at St. Francis Catholic Church with Father J Paul Byron officiating Burial followed in the family cemetery Survivors include three sons John Seth and Monroe one daughter Mrs Lula Fisher six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren Funeral arrangements were by Lewis Funeral home Joseph Spivey son of Mrs Belle Spivey has returned home with a discharge from the United States Army N R Britt Sr is a patient at Columbus county hospital Whiteville after serving about two years overseas with the armed forces
Plans are complete for the second annual Hallowe'en carnival at the Tabor City schools gym tonight at 7 00. The public event features a comic strip contest cake walk side shows booths fishing fortune telling a country store and a darts game with a small admission. Proceeds go to the club building fund which is sizable.
Mrs. W F Cox at the October Woman's club meeting urged a fall clean up campaign to improve Tabor City streets. She cited the deplorable condition and called for citizen education, especially youth, to keep the town clean and reduce waste.
Funeral rites for Mrs. Floria Norris 46 of Route 1 Loris were held at Mt. Zion church with Rev. W E Maring in charge. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Survived by husband Ed Norris five daughters and five sons, three sisters and one brother.
Rest rooms will open to the public at the Atlantic Coast Line station after a Merchants Association project was finalized in Wilmington. Officials from Coast Line met with local leaders R C Harrelson city commissioner J Percy Brown city clerk Willard G Cole executive secretary and city engineer R E Reynolds to work out details. Opening date depends on hiring a caretaker.
Harrelson's Pharmacy staff painted and cleaned the store this week. Employees rearranged merchandise and dusted shelves in anticipation of the upcoming Christmas season.
Mrs. R. T. Bruton and Mrs. Walker Spivey hosted the Homemaker’s Sunday school class and Business Woman’s circle of Mount Tabor Baptist Church at Bruton’s home. Program chair Ralph Spivey led discussions on Invested and related topics while C. C. Leggette and Anne Brooks McGougan spoke on honest money matters. A brief business session preceded a November meeting at Mrs. Shelley’s home.
Willard G. Cole outlines progress in Tabor City at the Monday Rotary gathering. He cites recent efforts by the Merchants Association and notes several developments visible to locals, while some progress remains less obvious to passersby. The club also considers a ladies night at Ocean Forest hotel in Myrtle Beach and appoints S. L. Jackson and A. P. Rogers to study the idea.
H. P. Harrelson an employee of the Plywood Lumber Company was burned on Tuesday while tending to duties at a saw mill near Loris. Gasoline exploded and his clothing caught fire. He smothered the flames in sand and was rushed to Dr Rogers Hospital in Loris for treatment of shock and burns.
Ernest Sanders and S P Smith lead the USO fund campaign in Tus table City as Columbus county sets a 4000 dollar quota while a 50000 dollar church construction project is approved at St Pauls Methodist church. Construction would start after 24 months with funds raised.
R. R. Cook of the Columbus Telephone Company reports five new telephones installed in Tabor City this past month with plans to expand further once equipment arrives. An extra circuit, five connector switches, and material for 20 more lines are ordered to increase capacity by about a third. Installations are pending an increase in load on existing lines, which requires subscriber consent.
Mack and George Canady deputy sheriffs captured a 100 gallon submarine type still in Bug Hill township in the Dulah section Tuesday. Four barrels of mash were destroyed. The still was not in operation when seized. Mr. and Mrs Valley Strickland visited Mr. and Mrs Audry Dudney on Sunday.
Miss Maude Rippon of Parksley Virginia was added to the Tabor City Schools faculty by Principal C H Pinner. She will teach the fifth grade and comes after graduate work at Radford State Teachers College and Peabody College. She arrived late last week to begin duties. Deland Leonard was admitted to Fayetteville Veterans Hospital for acute inner ear infection treatment.
The local Boy Scout troop won both the attendance cup and the most awards cup at the Whiteville Court of Honor. Tabor City scouts led county troops in attendance and honors, aided by Assistant Scoutmaster Jack Hyman who received applause for his work with the troop.
William Edward Hardee a longtime Conway farmer died at Conway hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at Hickory Grove Baptist church with Rev. Clyde Prince officiating and burial in Price cemetery. Survived by wife Annie, two stepdaughters Ethel Williams and Reba Strickland, two stepsons Elbert Lee and Harvey Lee, two sons Henry and Hy Nan, and two daughters Slara Anderson and Sadie Baylin.
Police and state authorities rounded up 33 offenders over the weekend in Tabor City ranging from public drunkenness to traffic violations. A state highway patrolman cited 16 arrests Saturday with 12 earlier in the week for traffic offenses. Police reported 17 arrests for minor offenses Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Davis Bruton, formerly Rosalie White, is convalescing after a major operation at James Walker Hospital with friends visiting in Chadbourn.
Sam P. Faircloth is a patient at James Walker hospital in Wilmington receiving treatment for a heart condition.
