John W. Barlow assumes duties as secretary of the Merchants Association succeeding Willard G. Cole. The appointment follows a long service record and and introduces a new leadership period amid local business circles.
A moving picture event is scheduled at the Baptist Church. The notice invites the public to attend and notes the talk band will discuss informative needs of the community.

Willard Cole resigns from the Tabor City Merchants Association and accepts the editorship of the Whiteville News Reporter. He will report for duty between May 17 and May. Cole will remain a resident of Tabor City for the time being and commends the town’s spirit and cooperation as he departs.
P A System receives donation of amplification equipment from Western Auto and local donors for the Saint Paul church. The setup, to be installed in the belfry, will allow the church to play hymns and seasonal programs for about 30 to 60 days before completion. The equipment can be moved to the new building when ready.
Colored students were guests at a theater event in Vapor City Friday evening. Mrs. Joe H. Anderson and owners issued notices and ushered students to special balcony seating. Roy Ruffkin of Wilmington visited here Wednesday. Mrs. Alden Leonard resumed duties at Joe's Jewelry after several days.
Donnie Williams, a colored employee of the Inbor Hardware Company, was admitted to Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville Monday for treatment. He has been seriously ill for several days following an attack of pneumonia.
The Civitan club starts work on a community baseball field by enclosing the area with a fence this year. The club aims to raise funds to complete the project including bleachers and field facilities. They have about $4,000 now and expect to raise at least the same amount more for completion. Plans include lighting for night sports, pending further fund solicitation.
TC Nine defeated Proctorsville 11 to 5 in the Lumber River league clash. Fifteen year old Glenn Stevens allowed 14 hits while Don Jernigan held TC batters to four of five at bat. Tabor City hosts Chadbourn Sunday.
Mrs. Thomas W. Tird president of Charlotte and Miss Aredia Adams state secretary of Raleigh will speak at the Ahows City American Legion post and Legion Auxiliary Pep dinner at the Legion hut Thursday May 15 at 7 30 pm. Take It or Leave It with Happy Sam Fowler to MC. Tabor City merchants provide 1000 for cash swords. Members urged to attend and renew memberships.
Mrs Roland Baldwin entertained at two tables of bridge at her residence on Wednesday evening honoring her daughter Mrs C H Prout who plans to depart for Cincinnati next week. The living room featured summer flowers and scores after several progressions. High score went to Mrs Willie Broobster. Guests included Mrs Prout Webster Miss Anne Brooks ougan Mr Miriam Garrell Mrs J A Huffham Mrs Harvell Mr Brown and Mrs Willard Wright. Mrs Baldwin served a sweet course.
Mrs Ivalene Lons was honored at a birthday dinner at her Parwey home on Sunday May 4 celebrating her 78th birthday. Her children grandchildren and many friends attended the event.
R C Coleman of the New Farmers warehouse in Tabor City completed a weeks long negotiation to acquire a third warehouse in Boone North Carolina. Coleman heads a family managed outfit including his sons R C Jr Joe and wife Harriet L Sikes controlling multiple warehouses across North Carolina.
Gov. J Strom Thurmond will address a Woodmen of the World camp in Duford. Atty. Gen. John Manuel the National WOW Director Alex Heise and Head Consul O Le will speak. About 35 new candidates to be installed. a fish dinner to follow. drill team from Columbia to conduct ceremonies.
Lloyd Hipps is in a local hospital day patient ward in Sal. He was admitted last week and his wife Mrs. Hipps is currently in Jisbury.
Edd M. Carter has returned after an overseas assignment with the Army Air Force where he held the rating of corporal. He rejoined duties here following his service.
Community focus on the June 10 municipal election as candidates file for mayor and six commissioner seats. R. C. Harrelson Sr. announces for mayor, facing W. A. Williams. other contenders include Dr. S. J. Potts H. Dewey Stevens Robert Soles Jack Strickland Horace Roberts and E. W. Fonvielle. Registration opens May 17 under registrar R. M. Garrett Jr. Church and school events highlighted with graduation plans and seating limits announced by Principal C. H. W. Pinner.
A group of Western Prong veterans unite to build the district’s first community center. W. C. Page donates a lot, veterans contribute labor and lumber, and a £500 county appropriation aids construction. Sawmill loaned by Luther Hill yields 4000 board feet of lumber as trees and support flood in. Building lot and deed arrangements are handled by Herman Tage, Herbert Wooten, and Grady Jordan. The center should be ready this summer.
The Loris school board moves to raise district taxes to improve both the grammar and high school buildings. A petition circulated to district residents has been sent in. If plans hold, an election is set for May 13.
Lill Dyson of Tabor City Cold Storage returned from Asheville where he attended the Southeastern Regional Locker convention. He was accompanied by B. E. Fowler of Columbus Cold Storage in Whiteville and Heywood Campbell of Bladen Cold Storage in Elizabethtown.
Coach S. W. Caruso released most of next year's grid slate for Tabor City High School. The 1947 schedule lists September 12 Dillon here, September 19 Wilmington here, September 26 Chadbourn here, October Myrtle Beach there, October 10 Fairmont there, October 17 Bladenboro here, October 24 Whiteville there, October 31 Hallsboro here, with two more games possible. Ted Fipps is captain as the team looks to rebound from 6 win 3 ties 3 losses in 1946.
The Auxiliary of the local Presbyterian church will mark its 25th anniversary at the regular meeting this Tuesday at 8 PM. Secretary Mrs. J. P. Brown announced the event, which also signifies the third anniversary of the local organization.
A branch of the County Library is opened at the Tribune office sponsored by the Pioneer Book club. Local readers may borrow on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30. A high school girl will oversee the library.
Officials said the regular Sunday evening worship will not be held this week because of the school commencement schedule. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Leonard visited Holden's Beach Wednesday afternoon. Miss Josie Lancaster, Mrs. Leonard's sister, is spending time here.
