Town board announces June 12 election details with named officials. Also notes a Glee Club concert tomorrow night at the school auditorium featuring sacred and popular music with an admission charge to help defray choir expenses.
The Green Sea club held its regular meeting Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Ernest Faves. In the president’s absence, Hayes presided. Blanton summarized county library efforts to provide reading material and encouraged women to use Dormity to read good books. Rose J. Webster demonstrated home freezer packing and wrapping materials.

Fair Bluff residents will vote on May 8 to elect a mayor and five town commissioners. Two candidates seek the mayor’s seat, C A Small facing J B Prince. Nine candidates run for the board, with several incumbents and newcomers listed alongside other hopefuls. election notices had indicated a May election date.

County commissioners discussed a proposal for an agriculture building and a hospital expansion in an election slated for late June. The Cancer Crusade in Tabor City ends with gifts accepted year round for the American Cancer Society. Coin cans were collected today and funds turned over to the local chairman. Workers praise the drive as highly successful both financially and educationally. final figures will be released after reports are complete.
More than one third of the Carolinas Yam Festival exhibit hall will host educational booths by State College extension. The fourth annual event runs October 11 to 13 with A Edwards as general chairman and B A Garrell heading the booth selling committee. Ted Garrell recently left Fort Bragg to join the Air Force school program.
The Loris Common Hospital filed its first annual report covering May 15 to December 31, 1950. It shows 1149 patients, 985 girls and 166 colored, with 1 birth and 461 white. Net profit listed as 3671.19 but subject to receivables and potential losses. Total accounts receivable end year 7847.35. Trustees praise staff and pledge continued service.
The War Department notified the Watts family that Sgt Don Watts was slightly wounded in Korea on April 7. His brother Dale Watts has returned to combat after recovering from earlier injuries in the same conflict.
Columbus county schools will display drawings and artwork at the Williams Township gym next Thursday May 10. All county schools are expected to contribute pieces and the local school will have a short work day to allow many residents to view the exhibits.
Mrs. Alice Burns, longtime assistant auditor and clerk to the Board of County Commissioners, was unanimously elected auditor to succeed W. D. Brooks as of May 1. The commissioners named her at a special meeting this morning, noting her experience handling much of the auditor’s work.
Market officials report 4373 crates sold this season with daily totals 1141 on Monday and 652 on Tuesday. Prices for good berries ranged from 7.50 to 8.50 per 24 quart crate, high reached 9.20. Juice berries volume was heavier than good fruit. offerings expected to run heavier late this week with some quality improvement.
Dan Williams of Tabor City was ordered held on a $3,000 bond after a preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace Matt Gore on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. The victim, Albert Nealey, a colored woman, remains in a Loris hospital with lung wounds and attended the hearing unable to speak clearly. Williams is alleged to have used a large pocket knife and was committed to county jail in Whiteville when bond could not be posted.
Over the weekend stickers reading yesterday Today and Forever and KKK appeared on autos trucks and store windows in Whiteville. The origin of the distribution is unknown and Whiteville police filed no report. City Manager C D Pickerrell ordered a vigilant watch for possible future KKK activity in the area.
Willard C Wright and Fred M Jernigan filed Tuesday to seek seats on the Tabor City Town Board as the June 12 election nears. Registration runs May 19 to June 2 with a 6 AM to 6 PM voting window at the town hall. Jernigan, a current council member, runs Jernigan’s Store while Wright operates Wright’s Gas Company. The board also authorized half holidays for street crew members arranged by H D Stevens Jr.
Corporal Horace Stroud of Tabor City reports Chinese Propaganda leaflets found on the Korean front. The tracts accuse Wall Street bankers and U S corporations of profiteering, urge surrender, and claim Kea readers will be cared for in the rear. Stroud, with three years service, has been overseas since August 12, 1949 with the 65th Engineering Battalion.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service at Saint Paul Methodist church will meet at Mrs Lewis Gore's home Tuesday at 8 o'clock. Co-hostesses are Mrs Horace Cox and Mrs Dewey Cox. Miss Mary Lou Cox leads the program with Mrs G S Cox as devotional chairman.
Ernest Hardee Jr leaves South Port Hospital to recuperate at home in Loris after injuries from January 5 automobile accident in Brunswick County. He is married to Nedra Strickland, daughter of Carley and Mrs Strickland of this city.
