Tabor City plans to buy 700 acre lake for park and fishing resort

Tabor City residents back a plan to form a corporation to purchase the mill pond from J L Dodd for 2000 down and 1000 a year over eight years. Mayor Carter and G L Norman spearhead the effort to transform the lake into a community recreation center with stock offered to locals, aiming for fishing boating swimming and picnicking facilities.

Bryant Elected Civitan President

Harry Bryant was elected Civitan Club president for 1954 1955 at the City Cafe meeting. James Brice became vice president and Wallace Soles secretary. The club will sponsor a local girl in the Strawberry Festival beauty contest in Chadbourn with entries due April 16. The annual Civitan Minstrel Show is set for April 15 at the school auditorium with cast led by Ben Nesmith and a full committee lineup.

Ernest Hickman, 61, prominent merchant, dies at Conway

Ernest Herbert Hickman, 61, retired merchant and farmer, died of a heart attack early Sunday in Conway hospital after long illness. He had moved to Howard to run a general store with his sons and had farming interests. Survived by wife Zula, three sons, one daughter, and three sisters. Funeral held Monday in Howard with Masonic rites and burial in Myrtle Green Cemetery.

Pre-School Clinic Set For April 12 And 13

Parents of six year olds are invited to a pre-school clinic on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 12 and 13, at the local school. The clinic will start at 8:50 a.m. and students will be grouped as planned. Principal Pinner said further arrangements will be announced next week.

Youth Choir Practice Scheduled at Mount Tabor Church

Mount Tabor Baptist Church will host youth choir practice in the church auditorium on Saturday at 10:00 am. Music department officials announced the session as part of ongoing youth program efforts.

Four Tabor City youths Jimmy Brady David Norris Billy Pease and Jon He Stroud were charged in Conway South Carolina with breaking and entering Huyains Store at Mt Olive on March 5 They were reportedly released on bond Three were arrested in Tabor City by Deputy Roy Haggin with the fourth, a seller now stationed in Georgia, returned to Merry County by Deputy T M Floyd The group faces charges related to a prior register of quantity six and were held to answer in Georgia and South Carolina authorities

Passion Sunday at Saint Pont Methodist Church

The Saint Pont Methodist Church will observe Passion Sunday on April 4 with Holy Communion at the regular morning worship hour. Pastor Carruth will deliver a meditation titled The Acceptance of the Cross. A film commemorating the reestablishment of Holy Communion titled The Lord's Steps will be shown at the 7 pm worship hour. Everyone is invited to attend.

Old Savannah Farm Revival Hopes To Boost Southern Lands

Edgings left Knoxville to convert 250 acres of swampy Savanna between Tabor City and Loris into a productive farm. With drainage, proper authorities, and scientific methods, he cleared 70 acres, sowed pasture, oats, and clover, planted strawberries, built facilities, and planned a 150 hog operation while aiming for a 1948–50 crop start.

New Development In Pond Project

Dodd agreed to sell to the corpe and raise funds with a goal to sell 150 shares to cash the pond project. Prospective stockholders can tour the lake on April 11 and 18 by motor boat to inspect the property before deciding to buy. At press time at least 62 shares were sold with 2990 dollars paid and 95400 in notes outstanding. A stockholders meeting will elect officers annually.
