Birbie Strickland son of Mr and Mrs Pollie Strickland was taken to Columbus County Hospital Monday for a blood transfusion after a year of ill health. Several local residents and families are listed as Sunday visitors and guests at nearby homes. The community notes include visits, trips to Raleigh for a funeral, and upcoming visitation day at Tabor City school.
Rumors circulated that Garrell’s Tobacco Warehouse was leased for the season by another company, with Garrell’s manager noncommittal. An eight-farmer Green Sea group reportedly leased W. F. Cox warehouse, while Garrell’s and Cox warehouses have been used in recent years. Other local warehouses owned by Roscoe Coleman and Harriett Sikes are noted.

The body of T-5 Harvey A. Fowler killed in the Battle of the Bulge is being returned to the United States for reburial. His parents Mr and Mrs Leon A Fowler of Tabor City have been notified. Fowler joined the Army July 19 1943 and served in the 712th Tank Battalion until his death alongside his brother Douglas Fowler.
The S. W. Garrell Co. plans to liquidate its stock and suspend operations. Manager Morris Garrell says he will run the Garrell farm near Tron Hill. The firm has about ten years in business, with earlier operations by S. W. Garrell and C. D. Garrell. Rumors say the vacated building may be leased by Dicus-Fowler for a Firestone expansion. Building ownership lies with C. D. Garrell.
The American Tobacco Company and H. W. Miller Trucking Company bought a lot at Seventh and Lewis streets and will build a tobacco prize house. The wooden structure will measure 120 by 60 feet, Building Inspector Frank Young said.
The Tabor Independent baseball squad held its first practice of the season Sunday at the athletic field with many former members and candidates in attendance. Practice will continue each Sunday afternoon ahead of the season, with players including Don Jernigan Kenneth Byrd Martin Byrd Robert Blackburn Robert Long Fred Soles Glen Stevens Bermy Stevens Orbin Fowler Ford Fowler Dock Fowler C M Fowler Ted Fipps and Earl Stanley taking part.
The Tabor City PTA launches a membership drive with a 390 member target as principal C H Pinner and faculty urge patron support. They aim to meet Southern Association standards this spring with at least half of patrons as active members.
The Tabor City town board plans to grow from three to five members. At the last meeting they voted to ask Rep. J. K. Powell to introduce legislation. Officials say the change would provide wider representation.
