Post Office Star Route Discontinued Monday

The Ta bor City star route which previously collected evening mail and shipped parcels to Wilmington will be cancelled effective Monday night The change delays mail by at least 18 hours for New York City delivery The local postmaster said he had no written notice but the driver quit making the Wilmington run citing cost and the route had drawn complaints from business people who relied on afternoon mail for urgent correspondence

Rotary Club Auction Boosts Summer Recreation Fund

The local Rotary club raised 520 dollars at last Saturday's auction sale and added it to the summer recreational fund. The program began Monday under Coach S. W. Caruso. Auction committee head A. A. White received praise for its success. At Monday's meeting Rev. F. W. Wilkerson spoke on temperance, and a committee was named to repaint Rotary signs on town roads.

Hit and Run Involving Mrs Wilkins Fractured Hand

Mrs W S Wilkins suffered a left hand fracture after a hit and run collision near the city limits while alighting from a Cox car. Police later arrested Calep Stevens on related charges. Wilkins, formerly Annie Pearl Gore, was treated for shock and injury.

Softball League Planned with Civic Clubs to Compete

Coach S Caruso will organize ball teams from Merchants Association Civitan Rotary American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars for a league over the next months. Interested groups should contact Mr Casuss by next Tuesday night. A tentative schedule has Rotary vs Pri Merchants vs Civytans and American Legion vs VEW Web set to start at 6 45 p.m.

BTU Outing at White Lake Recreation and Dinner

The Junior department of Mount Tabor Baptist church Baptist Training Union enjoyed a recreation program and dinner at White Lake on Wednesday afternoon. Athletic director W. Caruso supervised the swimming party. About 40 members attended, with officers R F McCormick Willard Wright and Robert Soles in charge.

Dodgers Beat Chadbourn in Fifth Straight Win

The Dodgers defeated Chadbourn 6 to 5 to extend their Lumber River League winning streak to five. Hie Soles earned the win, while Derrick took the loss as hitters Soles Jernigan and Sotes led with multi hit games for the Dodgers. Chadbourn’s McClenney and Derrick paced the visitors with strong at bats in a four lead-change contest.

The Border Belt tobacco market schedule firmed up in Raleigh with the North Carolina regions set to open August 7. A five-day Vacation Bible School begins at Mount Tabor Baptist Church Monday at 9 AM supervised by Rev. Winfrey Davis with registration Sunday evening during Baptist Training Union hour.

Gore Lake Case Reckons Dam Destruction Accusations

Barcie and Sam Williamson and Joe Westy Spivey with Azure Spivey were acquitted of attempting to injure property around Gore Lake after the dam’s destruction last year. The charges did not involve the dam’s destruction. The guilty defendants were fined twenty five dollars each. Ellis Baer pleaded to assault on Burnie Buffkin, accepted an assault penalty and was suspended sentence with a 500 dollar fine to Buffkin. Buffkin received three unsuspended sentences and a 25 dollar fine for assault with a deadly weapon. Five long term road gang convicts escaped near Chadbourn on Monday. one was captured Tuesday, the rest remain at large Thursday. Two of three prisoners who escaped last week have been captured.

Man ruled victim of heart attack in river accident

Clyde Manning died after suffering a heart attack while swimming in the Lumber River near Williamson Landing. He sank after helping his younger son, and his body was recovered hours later. Coroner Hugh Nair e ruled the death a heart attack. Survived by wife Anderson Manning and five children. Funeral held Sunday at 4 p.m. with burial in Lebanon Cemetery.

Local Woman Joins Columbus County Jury

Mrs. Louise K. Anderson became the first woman juror in Columbus County Superior Court. Clerk Lee Greer called the roll as she moved to the jury box among many men, with Judge Q K Nimocks Jr addressing the panel as Ladies and gentlemen of the jury.

Cannery Opens Two Days A Week In Tabor City

J P Huggins announced the Tabor City cannery will operate only on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting July 1. The community facility will be open two days weekly to process local harvests.
