A young girl, eight years old, died by her own hand on an old farm shortly after a failed separation with her mother. The body was found with a firearm nearby, and authorities led by Mount Ta officiating. The Fowler family is listed among local residents.
The Tabor City Tribune celebrates its second anniversary this week noting the first issue appeared two years ago on July 5 1946.
Local residents including L Elvington Rowell Cary Elvington and John L Pierce return home after visits. Families such as Bailey and Walston share time away while others travel for weekends and vacations in the community.
The body of Pvt. Franklin L. Watts of Nakina, killed in the European theatre during World War II, is being shipped home aboard the Transport Carroll Victory for burial. Next of kin is listed by the Army as Ned C. Watts of Nakina.
Three Columbus county men have been accepted for enlistment in the Army and Air Force during the past week. Goodman Grimsley Chadbourn joined the regular Army. Gilbert Strickland Cerro Gordo joined the Air Force. Archie W Beck Tabor City signed with the Medical Department.
Dan Jones was re elected commander of the Fair Bluff post of the American Legion at a Tuesday night meeting. Twenty members attended and enjoyed a spaghetti supper. Elected officers include J S Potts vice commander Richard King adjutant J C Rogers chaplain J C Anderson service officer Jim Turner financial officer J A Turner historian Jiggs Elvington sergeant at arms.
Last Thursday and the previous Friday games between the Civitans Rotarians and Independents were cancelled. A Tuesday game was forfeited by the Independent to the Rippers. The July 12-16 schedule lists Mon Civitans and Independents Tue Rotarians and Independents Thu Rotarians and Rippers Fri Civitans and Independents.
In Bolton, a man and a wheel worker died when a spare tire and rim struck them as they rode in a moving vehicle. Witnesses described the tire bouncing from the rim and hitting a passenger as the car traveled along a main road near Columbus. Authorities identified the deceased as William Ray, age 44, of Powell.
Motorboat races will be held at Gore's pond Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock under the sponsorship of the Tabor City Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Racing will occur in four classes.
An examination for a postoffice position is set this week in the Fourth U Region. The money salary and terms relate to an old application on file, with details still to be clarified by officials.
The Columbus County Board of Elections postponed the protest hearing on alleged irregularities in the May primary involving constable candidate D M Phipps. Everett W Small 87 died Sunday morning at his daughter’s home near Pai Bluff. He lived many years in Columbus County and was survived by his wife Carolyn and 4 sons and 4 daughters, 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral was Monday at 4 pm from his home with Rev EB Johnson and others officiating, burial in Powell Cemetery Fair Bluff.
The town board in Tabor City approved a tentative 1947 48 budget of 45000 with a 6000 rise for water and 6100 for streets and plans a bond election to fund waterworks. Mayor Al Williams noted two wells producing 80 and 40 gallons per minute with the 40 gpm well near collapse. a new 8 inch main from the Jack McGougan home to Railroad Street would serve hydrants for better fire protection. Revenue projections include mayor’s court funds and higher current year taxes.
Prosecutor dropped charges of false arrest against Chief L. R. Watsor and Officer Ted Wait in Recorder's court on Tuesday after the prosecuting witness W L Spivey requested dismissal. The case involved an arrest of Jim on a public drunkenness charge and alleged jail confinement without cause. The matter was tried before Mayor Williams, with costs in the charge noted but sent to Superior Court.
Burglars broke into the Dorman building on Railroad streets during the Fourth of July weekend but took no items. Entrance was gained by climbing the roof and breaking a window. A heavy door blocked access to the ground floor. G Dorman offered a $50 reward for information leading to arrests and conviction.

The body of Pvt. Robert Claude Byrd age 31 son of Mrs Ressn W Byrd and the late W W Byrd will be returned to the United States aboard an Army Transport in New York City. He died at the Anzio Beachhead Italy on May 20 1944 and is survived by his mother one brother Loris and two sisters Miss Kate Byrd of Tabor and Mrs C L Chestnut of Conway.
The Methodist Youth Caravan at Bethel and Pireway churches announced fall plans led by Edith Scott and Emma Boone. Meetings are set for Wednesday evenings with a 10 to 11 AM service schedule and ongoing youth problem solving sessions.
Twenty members have joined the newly organized Ta bor City Tennis club and membership remains open. Phil Hughes announced that those wishing to join should contact Edwin Wright, the membership chairman. A bridge tournament is planned soon to raise funds for court improvements.

The All-Stars split two games during a recent Myrtle Beach trip. They lost 8 to 2 with Byrd and Stevens pitching and Fowler catching. They then beat Brunswick Travelers 16 to 4 at Legion Field Whiteville led by Fowler with four hits.
Columbus County commissioners approved the welfare department budget to aid about 900 to 1,000 people in need while seeking the removal of welfare superintendent Mrs. Johnsie Nunn. They planned a future hearing, though no date was set, and indicated a new welfare officer could be appointed within about 90 days.
