Mrs. E J Legette died of a heart attack at a sanitarium in Lumberton on Wednesday afternoon. Surviving are multiple sons and daughters including C C Legette and Mrs D J Hughes of Bear City and W H Legette of St Simons Island Georgia. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Fairmont and interment followed at a nearby cemetery.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 from Sweet Home church for Mrs Juanita Hardee of Clarendon who died Sunday afternoon in Columbus County Hospital. Rev God Hurdle officiated and burial followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery beside her husband. Survivors include one daughter Shelby two sons Billy and Samuel at home and a daughter in law.
Joe Simon an active Civitan Club member was elected vice president at the regular meeting and will serve in the absence of Win Shelley. Shelley, club president, is at the tobacco market in Boone. Simon succeeds Clifford D. s who moved from Tabor City. The Homemakers and Business Circle of Mount Tabor church plans a January meeting at A. M. J. Oliver Prince, former Prince Drug owner, named district head for the Atlantic March of Dimes drive. He will distribute Atlantic gasoline, kerosene, motor oil, and Lee tires in the area with plans for two large storage tanks on Green Sea Road beyond Garrell.
In a Tuesday night doubleheader at Tabor City gymnasium the Acme Delgo girls won a thriller while the Delco team lost. Fred Soles aided the Red Devils early while the game threatened to become a rout. World War veteran Lieut W W Woody was named head of the March of Dimes drive for Columbus County with W G Bradshaw announcing the plan in Tabor City. Woody set a county goal of 2500 with Tabor City 600 Whiteville 1200 Chadbourn 400 and Fair Bluff 300.
Garrell Motors on Green Sea road opposite the Modern Cafe was sold to A. A. White of Bladenboro. White, former local school principal and current bus line manager, is rumored to have paid about 28000 for the business which has operated with used cars and repair service. It is unclear if staff will be retained.
In Charlotte Mrs. Gladys Garrell and Mrs. Genola Tolar of Garrell's Shop attended a spring and summer clothing show early in the week.
Court docket lists numerous local cases including joint indictments and sentences. Prices, fines, licenses, and suspensions are recorded for offenses ranging from driving while intoxicated to carrying concealed weapons and public drunkenness. Several defendants faced jail time or suspended sentences with court costs.
Mrs. L. E. Stevens, 81, grandmother of Mrs. L. S. Parham and Troy Bennett, died suddenly in Loganville after a heart condition. Funeral services were held Friday at 2:30 PM at Creek Bapt church with Rev. Ha officiating. Surviving are several daughters including Mrs. W. L. Wilson, four sons, a brother, and other relatives. Parham and Bennett relatives attended.
To listing due by January 31 continues slowly in Columbus county. Mrs. J. Percy Brown, official tax lister for South Williams township in Tabor City, urged property owners to list early to avoid long waits from a last minute rush.
