Three Nakina men receive road terms after threatening a farmer with a Ku Klux taunt. The incident follows a report of local dog stories and a North Carolina fire chief urging residents to keep cars away from fire scenes to allow firefighting access.
The United States Post Office reported a 9.24 percent rise in the last quarter of 1951 compared to 1950. Yearly receipts totaled 19,306.56 in the local office, up from 17,981.06 in 1950, with a notable boost from increased airmail and heavier Christmas mailing.
Major Harling is arriving today and will be met by Harling, his daughter Margie, and others. He landed Monday night after a 17 hour flight and notified a safe landing listing by telephone. He will report to Rapid City to assume duties as an instructor at the Snops of Mines.
The New Life Club calls its regular monthly meeting for Wednesday July 16 at 2 p m in the home of Mrs Worth Mills with Ralph Jolly as co host. All members urged to attend as an unusually important news session will be held.
The circles of the Woman's Missionary Society at Mount Tabor Baptist church plan meetings on Thursday January 10. Leila McMillian hosts at 3 pm, Dala McGougan at 2 pm, Charity Rogers at 1 pm in church, Mantha Harrelson at 8 pm, and Business Women at 8 pm with Mrs. C H Pinner.
Tabor City Boy Scout troop members will attend the District Board of Review Friday at 7 p m in Cerro Gordo. Scoutmaster Don Jernigan announced that several Tabor City Scouts will advance.
A new Tap Dancing class starts next Friday at 4 45 p m at the Vera W Marchette School of Dance. Children of all ages may report at the American Legion hut for enrollment.
Mrs. S. T. Rogers hosted a Sunday dinner party at her home to celebrate the birthday anniversaries of Mr. Rogers Mrs. C. M. Blanton and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dewiggins of Mullins. Guests included Leona Rowell and numerous local families and children.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service of Saint Paul Methodist Church meets Tuesday at 7:30 PM led by President Mrs Doc Bruton. Nealy A Long of Tabor City, serving with the 3rd Logistic Command's 529th Signal Depot in Korea, recently attained sergeant first class. He enlisted in 1917 and has overseas service including Korea since 1950 with the Army of Occupation Medal for Japan and the Bronze Star with five campaign stars.
Mr. and Mrs. John E. Wrenn and children Johelyn and Elizabeth are now at home in High Point. Jack Wrenn will join them later this month. Mr. Wrenn of the Wrenn Lumber Corp Greensboro has been at home in High Point and Greensboro for some time.
Jerry J Worley died unexpectedly at home on Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at Mount Sinai Baptist Church with Rev Zettie Ward officiating and burial in the church cemetery. Survived by two brothers Perry Roy Worley and John Allen Worley and maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs John C Cartrette.
Mr and Mrs Rogers owners of the Western Auto Associate Stores in Tabor City and Loris attended the Greensboro Merchandise Show during the week, meeting exhibitors and viewing new product lines.
The Women of the Tabor City Presbyterian church met at Mrs. J. C. Bell Jr. home Tuesday evening with Mrs. J. A. Hut ham Jr. presiding. Miss Caroline Murray presented the program Their Line Earth. Guest Mrs. N H Jenerette of Jacksonville Fla joined the gathering as guests. A salad course with coffee was served.
Mount Tabor Baptist church group held a Monday evening meeting hosted by Miss Jernigan Y W A. Miss Nell Fipps presided. Miss Mildred Holt led the Leap Year program with Sarah Garrell Bernice Garrel and Mrs. Howard Wooten assisting. Miss Mary Dov gave the devotional.
The Tabor City Parent Teachers Association will meet in the school auditorium on Tuesday January 22 at 7 30 p m Mrs R P Counts president announced The program focuses on Safety with awards to safety poster contest winners Mrs F C Norris Jr safety chairman to present awards A Safety film will be shown during the program
Janine. A yauko, Cox and Marion Baxter are in Fayetteville this week for tests before entering Army Officers Candidate School. Master Sgt. G Youmans, county recruiting officer, announced. Cox is son of Mrs. G S Cox and the late Dr. Cox, Baxter is son of Mrs. J L Baxter and the late Mr. Baxter.
Clyde Devon Boswell stationed with Uncle Sam in Japan begins a second tour with the Army culinary division. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Devon Boswell of Sandy Plains and is not in a danger zone. His brother Elbert Boswell serves with the Air Corps on the West Coast.
In Whiteville the County Board approved a license for Troy Boswell of Cerro Gordo to peddle in Columbus County. Boswell, a long time newspaper subscription worker, suffers from cardiac and bronchial asthma and arthritis but continues limited operations despite health setbacks.
Mrs Nesmith Jr entertained the Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club at her home with Mrs B L Nesmith Jr as high scorer. Refreshments of sandwiches and coffee were served to a group including Mrs J C Bell Jr and Mrs J O Prince.
Corporal Harold Turner Jr has ended his final furlough and will ship overseas. He spent Christmas with his parents in Fair Bluff and with his grandmother in Spartanburg South Carolina. Turner is a Fair Bluff High School class of 1949 graduate and Carlisle Institute alumnus before entering the armed forces at Fort Sill Oklahoma.
Farmers with land never operated as part of an old tobacco farm may apply for a new leaf allotment before February 1. Clyde Wayne urges that a tobacco acreage allotment can be granted only if the applicant has tobacco experience in past years, the operator lives on and relies on the farm, and the farm is the couple’s only farm.
The Tabor City Woman's Club will gather at the clubhouse Thursday January 17 at 0 p m. Miss Anne Brooks Me Gugan, president, announced the program on Interior Decorating.
Mrs. Margaret Edwards and her son Ronald along with Mrs. Mary E. Smith spent Christmas in Philadelphia and Newark. LeRoy Pearce from Philadelphia joined them for several days. Report of the Register of Deeds for December 1951 records 589 chattels 294.50, 171 liens 85.50, 134 deeds 259.30, 175 mortgages 440.20, 1317 irregular instruments 375.25, 49 miscellaneous instruments 72.75, 12 marriage licenses 48.00 totaling 1575.50. Parson Jones closed with a hymn about gathering at the river.
