Local list discusses a proposed county bond to fund an 18 classroom building and cafeteria at Tabor City. It notes civic leaders and community groups backing the plan, with cautious language about voter approval and district needs.
Coroner Worth D Williamson completed the inquiry in Whiteville and Bladenboro and ruled Mrs Geneva Ransom 37 of Mount Calvary died from poisoning apparently by her own hand at Columbus County Hospital early Sunday. Her husband Ressie was home when the poison was taken. daughter Frankie Ann said the mother drank it and told her father. Ransom had previously threatened such an act. Funeral services were held Monday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
Sheriffs reports three large stills destroyed in Williams Crossroads area. One 21 year old Chadbourn man Habelee Loeery arrested in connection with the largest 100 gallon submarine rig. Officers found 1150 gallons of beer in 27 barrels and other beer in two smaller stills.
The Lower City Town Board voted to study placing an order for a new eight thousand dollar fire truck as funds may become available in the coming weeks. Delivery could take three to five months after ordering. Fire Chief Gore announced plans for a local fireman school. The board also discussed extending Second Street and improving the Railroad Crossing with the Atlantic Coast Line.
Master Carl Wayne Boswell of Whiteville is named Mr. Columbus County 1955. He arrived at Columbus County Hospital at 12 57 a m January 1 weighing eight pounds seven ounces. He is the son of Mr and Mrs R E Boswell of Whiteville.
Johnny Capps of Chapelorn has been hired by the Tabor City Sweet Potato Marketing Company to inspect seed quality and advise Columbus County farmers. President E W Fonvielle said Capps will visit farms within four weeks and encourage cooperation to ensure seeds meet standards, noting better seed yields better crops.
Dr. Joseph L. James, chiropractor, moves offices to the Columbus Hotel building in Whiteville for central location while keeping Tabor City residence. He is active in Civitan Club and Merchants Association and chaired the 1954 Carolina Program. Married to Wille Tugwell with a young son.
Hichard Gordon the Junior Chamber of Commerce president was named chairman of the March of Dimes drive in Tabor City. County director C P Smoke Wayne announced the kickoff dinner at Hotel Whiteville at 7 30 p m Tuesday with community chairmen and Jack McGee present. A Helen Hayes film will be shown and quotas announced after the kickoff supper.
The 1951 tax law offers drought flood and cyclone relief for farmers. Soil conservation expenses may be deducted and new depreciation rules apply if used. Extension Bulletin No 366 AS provides details and can be obtained through the county agent.
Four Tabor City High players were named to the All-County football team after a New Year’s Eve banquet for Columbus County. Capt Jerry Cartrette at fullback Ben Spivey tackle Bobby Wright guard and Tally Eddings Jr center received engraved awards. Principal C H Pinner and Lloyd Collier of Whiteville spoke as each player was presented.
Senator-elect Arthur Williamson of Cerro Gordo has submitted his resignation from the Columous County Board of Education after two years as chairman. The move follows Buck Peay’s spring departure. state law bars holding two public offices. Remaining members have not named a successor.
The 1955 ACP allocation for Columbus County totals 86442 with 66642 designated for conservation cost sharing on about 5700 farms. Applications for practices to be carried out by July 1 open January 3 to January 21, with potential filings for fall practices later in January. Wayne notes funds distributed by county need, farm numbers, pasture, woodland, and cropland shape the splits.
