Announcement from Washington D C states the Tabor City post office will be built on southeast corner of East Fifth and Wall streets. Property owned by Paul Bowers Sr is selected for an 8 000 square foot single floor building with parking and air conditioning. Construction funds come from private investment under a government program to speed postal service. ownership remains private with government supervision.
Community agricultural committee guidance notes the need for timely action on cotton allotments. Farmers may reapportion by releasing unused allotment to help others in the county while preserving overall state and county acreage. Applications for reapportionment are due by March 1 with county committee review.
Al Whitehead, executor of the Tabor City Merchants Association, has spent a year selling Tabor City, traveling thousands of miles and making thousands of calls. He describes the early work of learning a new business and building a home while adjusting to the job. His first major assignment was a trip to Miami.
Six Columbus County students earned academic honor as names listed include Ann Cole of Pabor City Leroy Ward Spivey of Tabor City Helen Ann Helleman of Evergreen Polly Den Hette Taman of Whiteville Sharon L Stephens of Chadbourn and Jim Ward Spivey each recognized for scholarly achievement.
As AL Herlocker, chair of the 16acre Heart Fund drive, announced today fund workers will call on merchants for contributions within the week. The response to the call is said to be very successful, Herlocker stated.
The Loris Methodist Church opens a revival March 3 with guest minister Roy Reuben Marlowe. Pastor Rev. Dan Montgomery invites all to attend the week of services. Marlowe leads sessions at the church for the period, ending Friday.
Sweet potato leaders from North Carolina plan a joint annual gathering in Goldsboro on February 14. Representatives from the North Carolina Sweet Potato Association the Mina Yam Association and the North Carolina Certified Sweet Potato Growers Association will discuss seed through selling. H Brooks James dean of NC State College will give 400 Bushel Certificates to growers hitting 400 bushels of No 1 potatoes per acre. A day long program includes a panel on rare zones with shipper James Bardin Wilson processor Jimmy Garrell and growers Edwin Beamon and Daniel Pope of State College.
Local merchants will gather at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Ritz Theater to learn what the Tabor City Merchants Association is doing to attract new industry. President Benfo Newsmith Jr. urged all members to attend the important meeting.
County police served warrants on Eloise and Hes Waddell charging public notice violations at The Green Door on the State Line near Tabor City. Earlier warrants targeted Art Edwards and Maggie Todd linked to The Casino Inn, with an injunction forbidding future operation signed by Judge Morrison in Georgetown General Sessions Court.
A. Joel Watson of Tabor City was promoted to assistant cashier at a board meeting of the bank and trust company. Watson has over a year of service at the WooBank and works at the Fifth Street Installment Loan Branch. Mrs. Watson is the former Jenawter Gaubh.
Tabor City attracted attention from nine national firms last week as American Foods Inc considered locating a new plant. Jammy Dicus and Al Whithead spoke with local officials and engineers to assess labor supply and job prospects. If chosen the site would house a 425000 square foot facility employing about 300 to 400 workers and a public meeting date will be announced soon.
S Garland Fowler of G Agent receives top honor in Life Division for sales, income and client service. Ben P. Denman announced the year’s premier award, with Fowler noted for a 22 year career and multiple major company honors.
A newly formed Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Association chapter in Columbus invites all tobacco growers to a Monday meeting Feb 18 at 7 30 p m in the Agriculture Building Hitevite. Guest speaker Todd from North Carolina State College will discuss industry war and 1920 outlook.
Signup for the 1983 Feed Program runs February 1 to March 22. Advance payments totaling 46492.96 for 251 farms were made in the first three days. Farms must divert at least 20 percent of their Feed Grain Base, with a maximum of 40 percent or 25 acres whichever larger. Contact the ASCS office in Whitehill Workshop Bethel for full details and eligibility for price supports and farm storage loans. A tractor maintenance workshop is set for February 20 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bethel community. Love must triumph over hate.
